Just a few notes/suspicions in light of the season 4 finale:
1. The O6 leaving the Island was a protective measure by Ben
As Ben noted, he always has a plan. I think part of that plan was to let the O6 go. He might have known all the while that the Oceanic passengers were to never leave the island, at least until their desinties are complete (i.e. Michael on the freighter). But knowing that he had to move the island, thereby removing himself from that place, Ben also saw the opportunity to have the O6 escape without completing their island assignments. And in doing so, he set up a means for him to hitch a ride with them back to the island, knowing that they would have to return.
2. Sun is not as ruthlessly evil as she appeared
Sure she put up a tough front, both when she instigated a hostile takeover of her father's company, and when she confronted Mr. Whidmore. But I think that there are some important motivations for what she is doing, other than revenge.
I'm thinking that Ben is putting her up to the whole thing, taking Sun's father out of the mix, while setting up a trap for Mr. Whidmore. That's how she got the funding for the hostile takeover; I'm sure Ben has access to more funds than whatever she had as a settlement from Oceania.
3. We haven't seen the last of DesPen.
Everything looked a little too pleasant when they sent the O6 off for Membata. I'm thinking that Pen still has ties to her father; maybe he funded her search efforts. With that loyalty, Whidmore manipulates Desmond and Penny to work for his purposes; Desmond goes to the dark side in the future. In order to keep close with Pen, Des is forced to do some dirty work for Whidmore...
4. In the future, Locke really screws up as leader of the Others.
I'm guessing that something bad happens while the O6 are gone. Maybe Whidmore gets some upper hand on the island. Either way, I think Jacob might have asked Locke to moved the island again, thus sending Locke away, just as Ben ended up in the Tunisian desert after his turn. Vulnerable off the island (Locke won't be able to walk!), Locke tries to gather the survivors once again, warning them of the dire things that happened on the island, and trying to recurit them to return. But Locke is killed by Whidmore forces...which is how he ends up in the casket.
