The island is the garden of Eden. After Adam and eve were evicted from the garden the angel (smoke monster) was placed at the gates to stop them ever returning (by judging them by old testament law- which no one could pass), and then hidden from the world in time and space.
When an earthquake occurred near where the island was located in 1881 the black rock was marooned on the Island. There were survivors, Adaddon, Richard Alperts and Christian Shephard. Initially they banded together to survive, but at some point they discovered both the tree of knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life. All three ate from both trees, and were “ as Gods “.
With total knowledge, and immortality, they each chose different paths. Matthew Abaddon chose evil and wanted complete control of the island and the others on it. Richard Alperts stayed on the island and was content with being there, as was Christian Shephard. Having total knowledge and immortality they discovered how Eden was hidden on the earth, and how to avoid and then have partial control over the smoke monster.
Adaddon left the Island and had a child, however he discovered that the child had free will and was not going to follow his path. He returned with the child to take over the Island, but was opposed and evicted by Shephard and Alperts and the island was again hidden in a different time. Shephard decided that the Islands properties could benefit mankind and returned to the world. He began a family, and discovered, whatever happened to them in life they were at some point drawn back to the island by the Island – through shipwrecks. Christian’s son, Charles Whitmore founded the Dharma initiative to study the island and the island was populated. However Richard Alperts believed the island should stay as it was and recruited Ben to become leader and oust the Dharma initiative. Ben began his own experiments to populate the island but they failed every time.
Christian Shephard aware of these events knew that the only way to restore equilibrium on the island was to have a messiah, born from one of the three, but nurtured by only a good mother and born on the island. Also in order to defeat the smoke monster only someone completely good and without sin could pass its judgement. Shephard had not been idle in this quest and many of his children were on the flight, Jack, Kate, and Jin, along with Claire and the unborn messianic child Aaron.
Charles Whitmore, jealous of Christians plan for Aaron, plans not only to get control of the island, but also to kill anyone who may be the messianic child. Charles knows Ben from his childhood on the island, and is Bens constant, as he is his, and they are unable to kill each other. Charles knows some of the island secrets, but has never been fully trusted by Christian as he sees that he only seeks wealth and power.
Aaron eventfully returns to the island with Kate and is raised by her and Sawyer. He buries them when they die, in the caves – Adam and eve.
