Theory Ben & Locke Brothers – Part 2
Last week prior to Cabin Fever, I had speculated that Ben and Lock were brothers via the same mother, Emily. This is clearly not the case. In Cabin Fever you can see that Locke’s mother is not the same woman that play’s the young mother of Ben. She also bears a striking likeness to the woman that plays the older version of Locke’s mother, lending credence to the notion that the 2004 woman actually is Lock’s mother.
However, I believe that Cabin Fever, while dispelling the idea that Locke and Ben have the same mother, slides in clues that they are still related somehow. My revised theory is that Ben & Locke are half brothers by the same father. You don’t see John’s “young dad” in Cabin Fever, but Emily’s mother comments on him being twice the age of the then 15 year old Emily. This would imply that the father is 30ish. Note that while Cooper’s age has never been directly stated, he certainly does not appear to be anywhere close to 78 in the 2004 time frame. Also, if you look at the bio of the actor who plays Cooper you will see that he is actually 63, making the character somewhat closer in age to Emily. Cooper is a con man, I believe he used Emily in her deminished mental state to con John. (I do believe Cooper is an island person, but that is for another theory.)
Although not yet revealed, I believe we will eventually find out that Roger was not Ben’s biological dad. I think there are hints of this in the idea that Roger was clearly not valued by Dharma and he was clearly of a very different disposition than Ben.
Who is the baby-daddy of these two? I am not sure, but I believe that both women were impregnated by someone from another time, someone from the island. It may have been Richard, but I think someone else, maybe someone yet unseen. The reason I believe this is for several reasons:
1. Pre-mature birth: Juliet tells Sun that pregnant women on the island have all died before making it to the third trimester. Usually, trimesters are measured by 3 month periods. The third trimester would therefore start at about 7 months. I noted from the transcript of The Man Behind the Curtain, that Ben was “not due yet” but it was not clearly spelled out how pre-mature he was. When Emily goes to the hospital, she tells the nurse “I'm pregnant. I'm five--I'm almost six months”. We also know that in later life she claims that John Locke has immaculately conceived. I believe Locke and Ben were both fathered by a male from the island that had jumped to 1955 and then the early 1960s for the purpose of finding an Emily to father his child. Since half the DNA of the baby would be from a time traveler, the birthing problems on the island would extend to the real time mothers. Knowing this, the unknown Baby-Daddy made sure that the mothers had significant strain ! put on them in the middle of the second trimester to induce labor and save the child.
2. Items Test: The idea that Locke would have pre-determined instinctive knowledge of one of the items Richard places in front of him could be indication of reincarnation, but could also be an indication of a misplacement in time. If Locke was fathered by a man that should have had that son in previous decades, perhaps this leaves annomalies of knowledge from that time. I know this is a bit of a reach, but lets face it, know one can explain what happens if you time travel, so get over it. Perhaps, the man that fathered Ben and Lock had multiple children and then misplaced them in time. Therefore, Richard doesn’t know which of the son’s he has found without testing them.
3. Richard and Dharma are right there at birth: Richard is right there when Locke is born, as if he is seeking him. Also, Godspeed and Olivia are right there when Ben is born and work to bring him to the island. It is notable that Richard was not with Dharma so he was working independently when he approached Locke. The Dharma/Whitmore people (whom Richard and company later killed) found Ben. In fact, the Dharma initiative did not start until after Ben was found. Was he the reason the Dharma initiative was really begun? I note that Richard reached out to Locke for the second time in1972. This would have been right about the time Ben was brought to the island by Dharma. Is this why Richard came calling again? He didn’t get the one he wanted, so better go get him second choice?
On a last note, I believe Ben’s obsession with solving the pregnancy problem with the women on the island is a method of trying to rescue his own mother. If he can cure the problem, he could then send Richard back to administer the cure to his pregnant mother and save her.
I am very certain that lineage is important. The Shephards are important, but Jack is not the right carrier of that legacy. Claire is, this is made clear by Christian telling Jack that Jack’s Grandfather did not approve of his choice for a wife. This is why Christian sought out another woman, the “right woman”, and had Claire. That is why Aaron and not Jack is the important heir. The other families that are clearly important are the Whitmores, the Paces (Charlie via his mother, grand father and great grand father), the Lloyds (Michael and Walt) and the Fords (Sawyers family). Note that it was Cooper that ruined the Ford family and forced Sawyer’s dad to kill himself and wife and it was the wife that saved Sawyer from being killed also. I think it is significant that in the Sawyer flashback for the murder/suicide, we just see Mr. Ford’s feet. We do not see him or get his first name. He will be someone we know.
