We have learnt that in Lost, time doesn't necessarily run in one direction. The proof of this was when Desmond went back in time via consciousness to speak with Daniel in Oxford University.
Sure it wasn't time travel or the body necessarily, but we all know the mind and soul is what is important...and he only did that once he was informed by the "future" Daniel that he had to go see him. He asked Daniel in 1996 if he was changing the future, to which he replied "you cannot change the future". That is because everything that occurs at any time is a knock on effect of consequence. I'd love to do a little diagram for you all now, but aw well...
It is a time loop in which Desmond was informed to go back and contact Daniel...so Daniel was able to learn the concepts of time travel etc. He was then able to write down in his book the details, and in the "future" was able to then give them to Desmond. So there is no start to the whole thing, and each action is a catalyst for another part, whether it's from traditional "past" to "future", or from traditional "future" to "past".
Now lets look at theories which relate to such a notion, for example like the Adam and Eve one, in which Jack and Kate are presumed to be the 2 skeletons found in the cave, and Aaron is the birth of Jacob. This could all be a product of the concept that time doesn't run in one direction. Everything has a knock on effect in both directions, and therefore the story of the island is on repeat within a loop construed of traditional “past”, “present”, and “future” (Keeping in mind these three are all relative to where someone is standing/viewing in time).
Just a spark of concept came to mind: so feel free to tackle the whole concept as a whole, or tackle particular elements from it.

Want take this a step further? The fact Jack is informed by Hurley of a message (That he was not supposed to look after Aaron (was that correct?)), could be the catalyst to why Jack goes on a downfall with drink and prescription drugs, up to the point that he then tells Kate they have to go back.
Kate doesn't want to go back to the island, because she enjoys the life she has. She has been prevented by law to leave the state after he trials, and with the settlement of the Oceanic flight, she now has a life she could never dreamed of having after her previous experiences of fleeing the law.
In the case you speak of, I don't think the psychic was breaking the loop of the Lost legacy, but a part of it.
Something in this finale could suggest that what is "supposed to" happen in the eyes of the characters does not. But ironically if this Lost Legacy is on a repeated loop as expressed before, then the fate of everything has already been pre-determined, and they are taking that course of events.
Things always go bad to those that seem to go against what the island wants, and surely Jack's decline is what makes him change from telling Hurley they can't go back (Hurley knows they must cause the spirits tell him so) to wanting to go back (when he gets pressure from the spirits like that of his father). So it is possible that in the end Jack does return with the child who becomes Jacob on the island. (I would say this is at the beginning of the stories timeline, BUT if it is a loop, there is no beginning, just a continuous stream of events where that is one variable that contributes to the rest.)
What is "Supposed to happen" is a key element of Lost; with this being a story, and a chain of events: without them being followed, a break in the loop I originally spoke of would occur.
OH!!! AND ALSO! JUST CAME TO MIND!!!!
You know the video of rabbit 15 in the Orchid, and how when both exist, they are to be kept away, because 2 time-versions of the same entity can cause an imbalance time? Remember that Aaron was nowhere to be seen when Lock went into the Cabin with Christian: May be Aaron and "current Jacob" are the same entity but from different times? The only claim the writers have made that could go against this is that Jacob is a new entity to the show, but that's not to say "new" can't be interpretated in another sense.
Perhaps I ought to write this when I've collected my thoughts into a more concise, well written argument for an Ultimate lost theory?
