This Theory contains spoilers.
I have a theory that i hope is bang-on, not only because it would be nice if one of my theories was true, but also because this is how i want the show to go.
Apologies if someone has already posted this exact idea lol.
What if the writers repeat the sort of boring twist they created earlier in the season (by reintroducing us to michael as the man on the freighter, which was blatantly obvious from the start and we all knew) and inform us that the man listed in the newspaper clipping and therefore in the coffin is none other than Michael.
However, although the person in the coffin was announced to be Michael, someone (perhaps Ben or even Michael himself) faked Michael's death under an alias that was known as an alias only to jack and Kate and the rest of the O6. and instead of michael being in the dead guy, a complete random body is placed in the coffin?
This explains why Kate was reluctant to go, why Desomnd would visit solemnly (as he and michael bond on the freighter) and why jack was upset (because another lostie bites the dust) when in fact someone, perhaps Ben or even Michael himself, faked Michael's death under an alias that was known to jack and Kate and a complete random body is placed in the coffin?
Afterall, Jack didn't look in the coffin, he didn't even know that 'Michael' was dead at all until after he was put in the coffin. and if spoilers are true, then Desmond will visit, say that was a friend of Michael's (although he'll use the alias of course) and the guy from the funeral parlor will open the coffin and Desmond will go wtf? who the f*** is that!?
i think this would be much more interesting than killing off Sayid, Desmond Michael Ben Locke, or whoever it has been debated to have been in the coffin.
