This is probably totaly wrong, however, I have a theory which is based on three main arguments:
I believe that John Locke is sent by Windmore in order to find the island.
Argument 1:
Locke is the only survivor from the 815 crash who from the very first moment, when he realises he can walk, began to look for something in the island, holding anything he found out solely for himself.
Argument 2:
When Jack pays a visit to Hurlrey(the flashforward scene where they play basket ball at the hospitals gym)Hyrley says to him that he should have never gone with Locke. That phrase probably means two things
a)Locke was not able to save them
b)That Locke was not the person everyone thought he was.
Argument 3:
At The scene ( flash back )where Locke is paralysed in the hospital, clearly shows that his assistant( who is also not ageing, and later on he is presented as the lawyer of oceanic, therefore employed by Windmore )urges him to take the great step and visit Australia as if he has to go there for a purpose.
Assuming that the cause is to find the island, after talking to the guy who as I mentioned before assists him with the wheelchair, Locke wants to give the coordinates to Windmore.
In my opinion the entire series is Lockes contract with Windmore
