"Help me." Locke turns around: "What did you say?" Ben: "I didn't say anything."
I'm a little perplexed how Christian Shepard is now speaking for Jacob. There are two explanations: the producers think that using Christian as the voice for the island is a better idea than an ancient-looking bearded guy in tattered clothes. This gives the writers the opportunity to suck Claire into the scheme of things and adds extra drama to Jack's life, especially off-island. In a story-writing sense, this could simply be the most likely explanation. The producers did make a point to introduce us to a very sentient and 'dead-man-with-a-plan' Christian in last summer's "Missing Pieces" clip as a primer to where they are ultimately heading this season.
Yet that idea didn't set well with me.
Regardless of Christian being the voice for Jacob, Jacob did appear to Locke. Jacob is still in control from what we know. Why would Christian be speaking for him - is Jacob busy? Is he away on a Disney cruise? Getting a much-needed haircut? It just didn't make sense.
Remember when Locke was speaking to Christian -- Christian asked Locke if he knew why he was here. Locke, in a rather naive way responds with "Because I was chosen" or "It's my destiny" or something similar. Here is the biggest sign that something wasn't right. Pay close attention to Christian's response. He looks at Locke for a few seconds and finally says "You're exactly right" or, again, something similar (I don't have Cabin Fever on DVR to play again and refresh my memory, sorry.) To me, Christian said exactly what Locke needed to hear. He was appeasing him in order for Locke to do the island's bidding.
Or is it the island?
I theorize that Jacob has lost control. There are other forces at work that have usurped Jacob's authority. When Locke first heard Jacob, Jacob seemed to be in the midst of turmoil. Jacob could have been losing his power.
And you can't tell me that Claire's creepiness factor hadn't jumped way up when we saw her in that cabin. The two just seemed like they were hatching an evil plan. Perhaps Claire has been claimed by this other force in an attempt to separate her from Aaron.
Locke is now a pawn in the game. He believes that he is now the 'chosen' one for the island. A new force has gained control over the island and Locke.
There has always been a duality aspect to the island. We have been witnessing the struggles of good and evil the entire length of the show. We have also been led to question who is good and who is evil, what is good and what is evil (what is alive and what is dead, etc etc). The unseen parts of the island (in a supernatural sense) can be caught up in the same sorts of battles as the character we witness in each episode.
We've seen that Locke wasn't accepted into Richard's 'school' because he showed a tendency towards violence/power/authority/danger/self-righteousness/take your pick. This was symbolized by Locke choosing the knife. Maybe Locke is naively evil. He carries certain traits that make him susceptible to falling victim to his own impulses and desires. He is easily conned. The island is now using him because of these weaknesses. I believe that we will see Locke become a tragic character. In the end, Locke will finally become truly aware of what he is and make a difficult choice, or sacrifice, that will put an end to the island, the forces that be, and ultimately his own life.
I'm not much of a Star Wars fan, but will Locke be similar to Anakin Skywalker? Will Aaron be Luke?
I haven't fleshed this theory out as well as I would have liked. So, comment away: I'd like to hear other theories and suggestions.
