I've actually been wondering about this since Ben got cancer and needed Jack to save his life, since the island wouldn't heal him. Could the island have caused Ben to get cancer because it wanted to kill him and be rid of him? Some of the Others seemed to hope he'd die and even wanted Jack to kill him on the operating table.
Now it seems to be happening again. Is it just a coincidence that the freighter hit squad arrives on the island and starts it attack, and Jack is suddenly getting attacked by appendicitis?
The island ordered Locke to kill Naomi so she couldn't use her satelite phone to signal the freighter so they could pinpoint the exact location of the island. Locke stopped Naomi, but Jack used her phone and followed the instructions that allowed the freighter to get the island's exact location. In the island's mind it may consider it Jack's fault that it's being invaded by these evil people waging war on it.
At the same time you had Sawyer running through a barrage of gunfire and not even getting nicked by a bullet and Claire getting a few scratches on her when she was inside a house that got blown up. Both should be dead, but it was like the island put some invisible shield around them to protect them both.
Which leads to the question of Danielle's science team and the sickness that affected them. Did the island make them sick and did Danielle lie about the "science" team.
Because the fatal flaw in this theory is if Dharma was as bad as Ben said they were and deserving of being gassed, why didn't the island just make them sick and get rid of them itself?
Locke is also another example of the island possibly harming as well as healing someone. It seems whenever the island wants to make Locke do something it wants it starts to take away the gift of curing his paralysis. When Locke was laying in the Dharma grave ditch after Ben shot him, he couldn't feel his legs and was about to blow his brains out then Ghost Walt shows up, telling Locke to get up because he had work to do and the feeling magically flowed into his legs once more.
