As we all know, Christian Shephard is dead -- we've seen his corpse (as has Jack) and the producers have stated time and again that he is dead in interviews. However, we also know that he roams the island (and perhaps other places). The most popular theory (I think) is that 'alive' Christian is the Smoke Monster. However, I have another explanation -- Christian Shephard is alive on the island.
How can this be? I actually think it is fairly simple. As we have seen, time seems to (or can) shift when you come to or leave the island. I think it depends on exactly what bearing you are taking when you go to or leave the island. One heading leads you to a certain time in the 'real' world -- another heading to another. That is why Faraday is so adamant that Lapidus takes an exact heading when traveling back to the freighter. If he takes another bearing, he'll end up in another time period and the freighter won't be there. It also explains how the doc ended up dead on the island seemingly before he was killed on the freighter -- his dead body approached the island from a different bearing than that of the helicopter. That bearing made his body "go back in time" and reach the island at a certain "island time" that was before "real world time" -- or at least the doc's real world time.
So, assuming that is true, you can take the bearing/time relationship a step further. That is, what if Christian, say in 2002 or 2003 (before he is found dead in Australia in 2004), made his way to the island? And what if he took a bearing that had him reach the island on "island time" that was somewhat close to the same "island time" Oceanic flight 815 hit the island? Then Christian can be completely alive on the island at the exact same time the Oceanic survivors are on the island. By taking different bearings, they both reached the island at the same "island time" even though they started their trips to the island at completely different "real world" times.
Put another way: 2004 Christian is dead -- the Christian on the island is 2003 (or earlier) Christian that came to the island on a different bearing than 2004 Oceanic 815. By taking different bearings, they hit the same space/time on the island.
Hopefully you are still with me -- perhaps it isn't actually all that simple. However, if my theory is correct, then it would explain a lot of things -- including Alpert's seeming ability to travel through time (or not age). He is just leaving the island at different bearings and jumping into the corresponding time period. It might also explain how Michael seemed to get a lot done (alienate his son, get on the freighter, etc.) in such a short time. Perhaps he went back to the real world at an earlier time since we know the bearing he took was different than the bearing the helicopter took. Different bearing -- different time period.
Also, assuming I am right, this might explain where Christian was going on all those private trips he took. Maybe he has known about the island for years and years and kept going back to it. He does seems quite connected to the island, that is certain. But that is beyond this theory -- and my head is starting to hurt.
Would appreciate any thoughts.
