There were some interesting dialogue between Ben and Widmore in ep 409. Ben mentions that he cannot kill Widmore. In the podcast released the next day, Damon and Carlton mention there are rules between the two.
This to me seems like the world of Lost is a game of Chess between the two sides. One of the rules of chess is that a King cannot put another King into check, and therefore cannot kill another king. Also, from the very beginning of the show, there has been a contrast between white and black. Locke mentions this when discussing backgammon with Walt, Jack finds Adam & Eve each holding a stone - one black and one white, just to name a few.
If Ben and Widmore are the Kings of a giant chess match, they each have their own pawns, the world is their chess board, the island is the prize, and Jacob is the moderator or judge.
