The PTB have said that the secret to Lost is in the first episode of the show. It's an obvious clue and once we discover this clue it will unravel all the mysteries of Lost.
Well I have found the clue and, are you ready for this...it's in the orange juice.
Here are the facts to support my theory.
In the episode 'The Shape of Things to Come' Ben awakens in the Sahara desert. He throws up as soon as he comes to. But 'what' does he throw up...orange juice.
Let's start at the beginning :
Pilot Part I
Scene: The inside of Oceanic Flight 815
Jack is pleasantly complaining to the stewardess that his drink lacks a little punch. She sneaks him two miniature bottles of vodka. He thanks her and begins pouring the vodka into his glass containing orange juice. The camera holds the shot of the glass of orange juice and we see the vodka being poured into the glass. Jack drinks it all down. He gets up from his seat just as Charlie brushes quickly by followed by several flight attendants. As Jack is exchanging a few words with Rose, the plane begins to break apart.
Time lapse between Jack drinking his vodka/orange juice and plane breaking up: less than a minute.
Pilot Part II
Scene: The inside of Oceanic Flight 815
Kate and Edward Mars, the US Marshall are on the plane, sitting next to each other. This is their conversation :
Flight Attendant to Kate: Can I get you a refill?
Kate: I'm fine with this, thank you.
Flight attendant to Edward Mars: You, sir. Can I get you anything? Cocktail, soda?
Edward Mars: Just coffee, sweatheart. Black.
Flight attendant: Coffee, sure.
Edward Mars to Kate(who looks very much like the Kate from Eggtown):You look worried. I'd be worried too,I was you. But you gotta stay positive, kiddo. There's always that off-chance that they'll beleive your story. I know I sure do.
Kate: I don't care what you beleive.
Edward Mars: Oh, I know that's true. That's always been true.(Pause) You sure you don't want some more juice?
Kate: Yeah, I'm sure.
With this the camera zooms in on Kate's glass filled with orange juice as she reaches for it with her handcuffed wrists. The first time I saw this scene my attention was on the handcuffs since it came as a surprise to everybody, I'm sure. What crime has this lovely lady commited? Our attention was drawn away from the orange juice.
Kate reaches out for her glass and drinks the orange juice. Suddenly the plane trembles and begins to break apart.
Time lapse between Kate drinking her orange juice and plane breaking up: less than a minute.
My orange juice theory takes strength with the Juliet centric episode, One of Us.
Richard Alpert has convinced Juliet to take the position with Mittelos Bioscience.
He pours orange juice into a glass and stirs in some white powder, sugar it is not.
Here is the conversation :
Juliet: What is that?
Richard (approching her with the glass of orange juice in his hands):That is orange juice with considerable amount of tranquillizer mix in.
Juliet: You want me to drink it?
Richard: Oh yes, you want to be asleep for the trip, Dr Burke.
Ehtan (whose taking Juliet's vital signs): It (refering to the trip)can be kind of intense.
Once Juliet needs no more convincing of where she is going she gulps the glass of orange juice in one big swallow and quickly passes out, but not before a startled Ethan says that she should not have drunk her orange juice so fast.
Isn't it strange that after Jack, Kate and Juliet drank their orange juice, they ended up on the island. Now you may think that so what...60 odd people also landed on the island. Did they also drink orange juice? The answer is no. Jack and Kate did so because they were "returning" to the island. In TLLG, Jack tells Kate that they need to 'go back'. Have Jack and Kate discovered how Ben manages to slip between time periods...like in 'The Shape of Things to Come' Ben transports himself to the year 2005. We know that he consummed orange juice because when he comes to in the desert he throws up a mouthful of, you guessed it, orange juice.
I hope that I don't sound too pretentious by my claim to having found the mystery of Lost...there is more to it than this, I'm sure.
I throw this theory out there and welcome your comments, both good and bad.
