Its difficult to know if this has been flagged up before or not.
Future Technology/Anomalous Science/Conspiracy/Literary plotline/Treasure Hunt Clues/Game Structure/Mischeiviousness.
I have read theories that the island has a particle accelerator on it, as the Dharma octagon is the same shape as the huge Cerne model.
Sounds reasonable would explain phenomena and all clue names/books alluding to it. There have been shut-downs because of duplication 'incidents' at some of the previous installations in Texas. Also these experiments create a great deal of radiated waste. So bear with me.
Also people have compiled info to create facsimile maps of the island.
There is an island in the Pacific called Johnston Atoll that resembles the shape of LostIsland though not its topography. This island was the site of some nuclear tests and dumping ground for agent orange after Vietnam. Also the original island has been extended to accommodate further possibly underwater installations. Similarly to Lost there is an off island where staff/military live. The island was 'abandoned' in the 2003 because of "leakage" and all the building demolished leaving just one set of sealed doors.! This island is the furthest one can get from civilization and it has a large outer reef that makes navigation very difficult and there is a 23 painted on the runway. Special permits have to given for visiting. So there are some circumstantial similarities physically with LostIsland.
However there is an extraordinary website called Johnstonmemories.com
where former staff/military wax lyrical and rhapsodise about the island despite it being nuked at least 6 times. I assume they have signed confidential agreements but they talk about The Rabbitman. He used rabbits to test for leaks and there was a mascot called Thumper Dumper. It was an all male establishment as it was feared women would be sterile. But originally in the forties there was some indigenous population but not anymore. On arriving on the island staff were issued with GasMasks and a pair of board shorts. The most compelling aspect of their reminisences is the oft repeated desire to return.!!
OK so there is this real abandoned island where experiments which may or may not be into particle acceleration. I think these would an inspiration to our lostwriters.
I am also drawn to my own theory regarding Maelstrom and Vortices and the theory that the book is based on Lost Horizons but I think they are just reiterations supporting the Experimental Installation /Paradise paradox of above.
However I am about to combine this with another great theory from the web that ties up all the other literary allusions, visual clues and number specification while remaining consistent with me theory. Lostisagame.com collated all those given factual details and has worked out the structure of the series is a game on four levels, just like Degroots theory of chess playing. There a lot of chess and black and white imagery in there.
Lost is game set on the Paradise/paradox island stuffed with clues for us to work on. The last show will game over and we see the first shot of Jack again as he starts his replay.
