The Episode "The Cost of Living" from season 3 gives proof positive that the Island either IS the Garden of Eden or at least CONTAINS the Garden of Eden.
And, to make things more interesting, the online episode is longer than other episodes by nearly ten minutes. In this ten minutes, after the show ends, the scene I am about to describe IS PLAYED AGAIN!!!!!! Solidifying my theory...read on, then check it out for yourself.
Before I get into this, we should note that J.J. Abrams is a devout Catholic, so this would easily be on the board for him as a creator.
Here's a VERY brief synopsis. My brother and I have about a million pages written on this, but we haven't worked out all the kinks yet. Here is what we KNOW about the island from this episode...
The smoke monster is seen appearing as images from Eko's past throughout the episode, most notably as his brother Yemi. Yemi tell Eko his judgment time has come. Eko heads into the woods searching for Yemi and finds him near the center of the island. Right before Eko's judgment time comes from the monster/Yemi, Eko is seen underneath a HUGE SPRAWLING EXTREMELY OLD TREE. It's obviously computer generated, and the producers have gone to great lengths to show Eko under this tree. Strangely, Damon and Carlton did not mention the tree in the podcast following the episode. Why? Because they couldn't--the clue reveals the identity of the island!
In the center of the Garden of Eden set two trees--the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil as well as the Tree of Life. We know that Eko was near the center of the island when he saw this tree because when the smoke monster killed him, those in the Pearl Hatch heard the commotion. The Pearl Hatch was shown on the map as being near the center of the island, as its name implies.
As he's standing under the tree, Eko is yelling something to his brother. He says, "You say you want to hear my confession. Why--why now? Show yourself. WHERE ARE YOU? WHERE?" These are the exact words spoken by God when he came down to the Garden looking for Adam and Eve after their sin. He said, "WHERE ARE YOU?"
After seeing the tree, Eko turns and sees Yemi (i.e., the smoke monster) in the middle of a serene looking garden of flowers (what color are the buds...red and apple-like, of course) Here he refuses to repent of his sins, and Yemi becomes the smoke monster and kills Eko.
The producers have said the first episode contains a huge clue to the show--the clue comes when the survivors name the two dead people in the cave ADAM AND EVE. It's so obvious, too obvious, in fact. That's what makes it brilliant.
This episode also has extreme Adam and Eve undertones. The opening scene shows Eko stealing food and giving it to Yemi, tell him that it was okay to eat, very forbidden-fruit-esque.
My brother and I are comprising an entire theory for the show based on much of what this episode revealed. It's too lengthy to pen here, but more will come. Bottom line is that we believe the island either IS the Garden of Eden, or at least CONTAINS the Garden of Eden. We also believe it has been scientifically cloaked. This balances the whole faith vs. science piece of the show. It's a place of faith, cloaked by science. We have a lot of information on the science vs. faith stuff, as well.
The tree of Life being on the island explains the healings that have occurred to several people. Their mere proximatey to the Tree of Life is having an affect on their physical bodies. It also explains Richard's lack of aging. He apparently knows of, and perhaps eats from, the Tree of Life.
As mentioned, THERE IS SOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE to our theory, but this is the heart and soul. Someone please debunk this. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY...keeping me up at night...its all I can think about. If you can prove us wrong, I will breath easier!!!!!
