My theory is that the island itself is essentially the garden of Eden or what I would term "the navel of the Planet" THe point where all geosymantic energy converges on this world and in this dimension. THe survival of the island is essential to the survival of the human race. Many cultures have sought out the island for good purposes or ill and many times accidentally, including beings not of this earth, ie the smoke monster. THe island is sealed off by geo magnetic forces tht affect the time space continuum. All people in this world are connected through various degrees of separation but because of the nature of the island the synchronicities of people s lives come closer together when they are on the island. Entering the island while awake can cause a number of side effects because of the forces surrounding it. In a nutshell, bein pn the island is like being in the eye of a geo-magnetic hurricane (DEsmond washed ashore during a storm! , which is why a submarine was most often employed to get on and off not to mention its secrecy by the people who had come to inhabit the island and its caretakers.
