Seeing Greg Turners Post about the Smoke Monster got me to thinking and I have come up with this theory.
The smoke monster can control your dreams and visions. For example:
-Locke seeing Yemi's plane in a dream
-Locke dreaming that he is Mr.Eko climbing the rock wall by the question mark
-Mr. Eko Dreams of Yemi telling him to find the question mark
-Mr. Eko's Dreams of Ana Lucia telling Eko that he needs to Help John
-Locke's Vision with Boone wheeling him around the airport
-Boone's vision of Shannon dying @ the hands of the monster. Remember when Boone gets back, he says " is that what IT made you see?" maybe he was talking about the monster and not the curry he made.
All of the above Dreams are helping the individual complete a task that needs to be done for the island and I believe they are all manifested by Smokey.
This could even play into how Juliet see's Harper appear as we know she has confronted the smoke monster in S3. Harper could be a manifestation of the smoke monster yet giving instructions on what needs to be done.
Now I feel this plays a big role into the flashes that Desmond was seeing at the end of season 3. For reasons I will explain, Charlie needed to die. Now the first 3 times, Charlie was suppost to drown saving Claire, get hit by lighting, and fall of the ledge with the Bird. Desmond saved him all three times. Smokey now catches on and realized that Desmond must be seeing things before they happen and prevents them from becoming reality. So now, Smokey uses its power to controls his flashes and shows him a situation where if Charlie dies, he will get Penny back in catch22. It creates a reward, if you will, for letting Charlie die. Of course he saves Charlie's life from being struck by the arrow and it's Naomi and not Penny that Parachutes onto the island. Now i believe that no matter what, Charlie dead or alive, it was always going to be Naomi and not Penny. I'll explain more in a second.
So at this point, Smokey realizes that Desmond cannot be bought. So he creates a flash of Claire and Aaron leaving the island in the Hele, as long as Charlie drowns turning off the flashing yellow light. You see, he give Desmond a situation where he knows that Charlie will WANT to die. Charlie could have easily ran out of the room and shut the door behind him, but he thought he had to die inorder to save Claire and Aaron. Obviously he was wrong.
In both cases(catch 22 and Through the Looking glass), I believe that Smokey is trying to make Charlie die with a reward for doing so. But in both cases, i think they are false rewards. As we now know, its not Penny's boat and Matthew Abadon sent Naomi there to lead the team. And Claire never gets off the island.
So the question is, Why does Charlie need to die? Why is the island/Smokey being so persistant in killing him off? I believe that Smokey/the island wants Aaron off the island. Better yet, it wants Aaron away from Claire and to be raised by another. Remember in S1"raised by another" Richard Malkin tells Claire that it is imparative that she be the one to raise her child. As we have seen, Charlie is very protective of Aaron and Claire and would never have allowed the two to be separated. Smokey sees this as a problem and need Charlie gone if he is going to get Aaron away from Claire. And by the looks of it, Smokey succeeded. With Claire stuck on an island with no possible way of getting off, Aaron is ensured to be "raised by another". We all know of the good and evil theory. And as much as we like to look at Kate, she is a murderer. As her father put it, she has murder in her heart. And now she is the one who is raising Aaron instead of Claire who, by the looks of ! it, was a good person at heart. Thats all I got.
