I think Ben gets his money because he has the ability to travel through time.
It's been around from the first season, the time travel concept, and they didn't tackle it alot, but now they're going right for it.
Perhaps Ben went back in time and used his funds and abilities to get all of the 815 people together for some ultimate cause. It would explain why the first season was so filled with coincidences between all the 815ers. Perhaps all of these people were necessary to his society, but it got too complicated to get them one by one so he staged this flight to bring them all to him.
Would also explain why Widmore wants it and why no one can find it, and the reoccuring characters in flashbacks (Others?). It would also explain the old lady in the ring shop that Desmond talks to. She could just be a time-travelling Other that already knew exactly how that situation was going to play out.
Anyways, maybe Jacob is some presence that is stuck in time and gives Ben the inside info on a good place to travel back to. In exchange, Jacob is worshiped, and probably feared too. The Others could be following Ben and Jacob out of fear of being erased from existence.
C'mon, how cool would it be if Ben escaped from Locke and went back in time to fuck with his childhood?
