In light of Thursday's "Ji Yeon" and all the info gleaned by myself and others here at DarkUFO during the Find815 game, I feel as if I need to speak up. After the words of Captain Gault, in his explanation of the black box, pointed directly to the plane having been staged and that Ben was behind it, I'm forced to ask a simple question: Does no one remember or pay any heed to the note given to Sayid and Des at the beginning of the episode?!? Clearly "Don't trust the captain" was a clue to us viewers that the captain is just telling us what a lot of us want to hear. We all know that the plane being a plant was the most prevalent and widely accepted of theories regarding 815 being found in the Sunda Trench... it's been that way since the ending of Find815, even before Season 4 started. However, I would like to take Michael's note to our Lostaways as a key piece of evidence; the writers were subtely telling us that Gault is being forthcoming in misinformation.
While I orginally was a staunch believer in the staging conspiracy (though by the hand of Widmore/Hanso/Paik), I now subscribe to a minority theory about the "fake" plane at the bottom of the sea: that the plane was "duplicated," much as the infamous bunny #15 in the Orchid orientation video. I'm sure you're wondering how this duplication happens, and I'm glad to give you my own thoughts on the subject. I believe that (in Lost) massive bursts of energy cause objects, animals and people to become split off from the original, copied and displaced. But how/why 815? My nearest guess is this: When Desmond failed to input the numbers and press execute down in the hatch and the resulting system failure caused the Swan to discharge electromagnetic energy upward, thereby crashing our bloody plane, the electromagnetic burst didn't just cause it to crash and split into the three sections (cockpit, fuselage, and tail), but also replicated it and thrust that version... you guessed it... into the Indian Ocean and down to the Sunda Trench. I'm not sure where/when this would've happened, but based on the plane that was found being relatively intact compared to what crashed on the Island, I'd say that it either appeared out of nowhere at relatively low altitude above the water or actually within the water itself. Either way, it would have little time to break apart and would all settle close together. Voila! One Oceanic 815 off the coast of Bali, all 324 passengers present and accounted for.
The best example of this outside of LOST is both a book and a movie: The Prestige (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prestige). In the Prestige, the magician main characters use machines called "magnifying transmitters" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnifying_Transmitter), which use massive amounts of electricity to create duplicates of the magicians so that they appear to be in 2 places at once. This device, while fictionalized in The Prestige, was actually a real invention by scientist Nikola Tesla, and it's predecessor, the Tesla Coil, was situated at Colorado Springs... a "highly geomagnetic location" that he selected in part due to it's frequent thunderstorms. Starting to sound familiar? Brings images of our little rainy Island to mind.
As this season has progressed I feel more and more vindicated in this belief. Ben recently asked in "The Other Woman" if the bunny he was eating had had a number on it, and I can't tell you how many times I've heard Damon & Carlton prodding us to go watch the Orchid vid over and over again in the official podcasts this season. In this last podcast on March 10th, in fact, Darlton confirmed once again that Orchid and the bunny incident are canon to the Lost universe... an integral piece in solving the puzzle. I feel that it is important to note some things in regards to duplication: in my mind, if something is copied and displaced, it would become a seperate entity and no longer be tied to the fate of the original (thereby explaining for differences/discrepancies, such as those noticed by Lapidus in "Confirmed Dead"). Also, just because the plane and those onboard were duplicated doesn't rule out any wrongdoing or conspiracies by those knowledgeable about the Island. To me, Widmore/Hanso/Paik are deeply connected to the Island, and their knowledge of it and its effects/powers can lead to some serious manipulation of the public... so, in essence, they could lead a salvage operation to the site where they know duplicate 815 to be (thru the Maxwell Group), and just conveniently stumble upon the flight wreckage, leaving the public to feel that the mystery is solved while they go off galavanting with their freighter to find the Island again, unhindered now that no one is looking for our Losties anymore.
One more thing... I think many people are throwing around the term "wormhole" a little too recklessly. As I have come to understand them, wormholes only exist when 2 black holes are connected to one another, and only if something can can keep from being ripped apart to it's atomical constituent pieces after crossing the event horizon to come out the other side would anything be able to go through one end and exit through the other. I think what we've seen on Lost is a cast of "vile vortices" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vile_vortices), which are "twelve roughly evenly distributed geographic areas that are alleged to have the same mysterious qualities popularly associated with the Bermuda Triangle." Many locations featured in Lost seem to be connected to these vortices, including somewhere between Tunisia (where Charlotte found the polar bear and DHARMA collar) and Nigeria (where the beechcraft carrying the drug runners and Yemi took off from). Don't ask me about the science behind these vortices, but Damon Lindelof seemed to allude to them when he referred to "certain special locations on the Earth that relate to our show..."
