It seems that while Dharma was on the island, the access to the island was pretty open. When Ben arrives to the island with his father, they almost look like tourists at first, not like people who went through a lot to get to the island – they are clean, well-dressed, etc.
I agree with the theories I read about how Hanso/Widmore/Dharma/(possibly Paik) are behind Dharma and working against Ben, who is trying to protect the island by any means necessary.
Maybe after the "Purge", Ben and the others somehow made the island invisible to the outside World and access to the island much harder to Hanso/Widmore. So after the "Purge", Hanso/Widmore/whatever lost contact with the island, but they know that it's there, and are trying to get access to it.
While trying to find the island, Widmore gets a hold of the Black Rock log book and then sends a series of planes and boats (Desmond, Oceanic 815, the Freighter, etc.) to the island’s approximate location. These boats/planes crash on the island, and Hanso/Widmore hope that people survive and then try to find a way to contact the outside World from within, and thus let Hanso/Widmore know where the island is and let them access it again.
Once Hanso/Widmore/whatever other big corporations find a way to get on and off the island again, they are planning on getting rid of all of the people on the island who might know of its existence, and only placing their own people there.
Therefore, the plane wreckage of flight 815 was placed by Widmore, and he was never planning on letting any survivors off the island. He was just using them to find a way to get on/off the island. That's why he sent Desmond there, because he was never planning on letting him off.
If Paik is on the Hanso/Widmore side, then it’s unclear why Sun is on the plane. It was either a coincidence that was not supposed to happen, which would make Mr. Paik search for the island on his own or against Widmore to save his daughter. Or, if it was known that Sun was going to be on the flight, then maybe it was a sacrifice that Mr. Paik was going to make to prove to Widmore that he is serious about working with him, and he was mad at Sun anyway for being with Jin and for trying to run away to the US… There could be a number of explanations.
I also think that Jacob, Alvar Hanso and Elsa’s boss are all in the same category – possibly the same person or maybe twins/clones of each other. They have many similarities: all very mysterious, powerful, invisible except to a select few, hard to find, not fond of technology, and may be 100+ years old. It’s hard to speculate about who they are and how they are related because so few things are known about them, but somehow they are all very similar.
