Well it was said early on that Desmond and Penny would play a very important part in regards to the overall storyline arch. I started thinking how that could be possible.
Could this be nothing more than a man named Widmore, so possessed by greed and his hatred for Desmond, that he knew enough about the island through purchasing books like we saw at the Auction, and sent Desmond on a journey. That journey lead to the island (or) future Widmore, knew enough about the island that he is using Desmond as a guinea pig.
Perhaps Widmore knew that Desmond loved Penny so much, that he would move heaven and earth to get back to her. Suppose Desmond has always been traveling in circles trying to do exactly what Hawkins said he could not, and that is change the future/as the universe course corrects.
What if Desmond, not knowing has been on he same journey for a period of time now, each time getting closer and closer to beating the universe and the future at its own game. What if he knew for whatever reason, that by brining the Losties to that island, they would be instrumental in changing his quest (example. He knew Charlie would die two different times, and saved him.) His first travel through, he saved him one way, the second time through, he saved him the other, all the while realizing in some part that Charlie would be instrumental in changing things in a certain way.
Suppose Ben knows that you can beat the universe, and you can change the future faster than the Universe can course correct. Suppose that Ben is trying desperately to prevent Widmore, but more importantly prevent Desmond from accomplishing this. Perhaps the Losties were supposed to get off the island for the sake of Desmond's path, but maybe not necessarily for the benefit of the island. Widmore is trying to make sure that while in the future, he protects what will eventually be his, Ben is trying to change things to prevent him from doing so, and Desmond just wants to alter the past enough to find his way to Penny in the future.
All the rest of the Losties as Jungian Psych would call it are the animus figures, Desmond the "animus"(hero on a hero's journey) and the "Shadow" (Desmond's unconscious mind (Smokey)). I think the whole show seems to be saturated in Jungian Psych, but that is a whole different story, and one reserved for more scientific person, but I can say, he believed in the collective unconscious and exploring worlds through art, mythology, dreams, religion, philosophy, astrology (hmmm numbers) and sociology. For a good read, look it up.
So - with that said, I have to wonder if Desmond is going against the grain, and doing everything he can to make his way back to Penny so their two seperate worlds collide. In the end, perhaps they reconnect, but the only way to do so, is for Jack and all to go back to the island. They perhaps are the key to Desmond finding his way home.
