Sorry. Originally posted a smaller version of this in the Forum section. Meant for it to go under Theories.
Seems to me that the recent introduction of time travel makes this final series conclusion possible. I am not sure if this theory is already out there, but I am suggesting that the final episode will show that ALL survivors (with the exception of the Oceanic 6 (Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Sayid, and someone yet to be identified), will all be "sent" back in time to the original airport and boarding date of 9/22/04. On the flashbacks that we had been seeing during Season 1, of the Losties boarding the plane, there was a lot of discussion of seat assignments not lining up, one 815 was a Boeing 777, while the other was a Lockheed L-1011, it appeared that some flashbacks had different passengers loading at different gates, etc.
I believe that both flights DID indeed take off from Sydney, but that the "second" one had a different pilot (no ring on the video of the pilot at the bottom of the ocean, remember? Besides, the first pilot was killed by smokey). When we see the wreckage at the bottom of the ocean, it is indeed NOT a hoax or a fake crash, but a real (orchestrated?) crash at a different location than the island to protect the secret.
The only possible people that can be part of the Oceanic 6 were the ones NOT in the hatch, and NOT in near proximity on the beach (Purple Sky Event). That leaves Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley (on the dock end of season 2), and Sayid Sun and Jin (on the boat coming to rescue the other 4), and Walt and Michael (sailing away form the island). Jin is now dead (notice date of 9/22/04 on the tombstone), which means he is NOT one of the survivors, but actually died on the "2nd" flight 815 real crash. Sawyer, Walt and Michael are the only other possibilities for the remaining survivor, if this theory is correct.
I also propose that Jack was NOT lying in the courtroom when he said there were originally 8 survivors, but that 2 died prior to being rescued. Nobody in court challenged that claim, so it seemed to be common knowledge. Whoever rescued the Oceanic 6, must've also recovered 2 bodies (either Walt, Michael, or Sawyer). Hmmm... wonder what might've happened?
So, other than the Oceanic 6, everyone else you've come to know and grow attached to are actually gone (one version of them anyway), and have been for 4 years. But, TPTB wouldn't do that to us loyals, would they? No. Of course not.
