This is just a small theory (or mini-theory) and my first one too.
Upon watching "meet Kevin Johnson" It dawned on me that Michael hadn't been away from the island for very long, in fact, he left on lost day 67/68 and Naomi parachuted onto the island on day 87.
Now i don't care how fast anyone can move, I seriously doubt Michael can:
------------------------------------------------------
*navigate a fishing boat back to Fiji from the island,
*make his way back to New York,
*fall out with Walt,
*attempt to kill himself,
*end up in hospital,
*get better again,
*attempt to kill himself again with a gun,
*meet with Tom Friendly,
*get back to Fiji,
*and finally take a freighter back to the island.
------------------------------------------------------
... in just 20 days!!
I would say more like a year, or 200 days (for the sake of argument, this is a fairly wild guess/assumption)
Now lets think back to the 31 minute late 'package' sent from the freighter. That package didnt travel all that quickly, and I'm not too sure on the distance between the island and the freighter, all i know is you cannot see the island, and it is a fair way by helicopter, just under a day i think. Another wild guess but lets assume it takes a package 3 minutes to reach the island at a 'launched' speed, it seems fairly reasonable even if it is a wild guess. So maybe the island isnt 31 minutes behind, more like time slows down 10 times on the island.
The losties now have been on the island roughly 100 days, if the slowdown was true, they would actually have been gone 1000 days, almost 3 years, and the real world time would be 2007, not 2004. Michael would have been gone almost a year before he came back.
Now. I know your all thinking "if that theory was accurate then michael would have arrived back in New York 2 years after the crash, but his mum asks him where he was for 2 months", think about it, how does a time anomoly occur and yet instant communications happen? impossible? no, not if you travel along the correct bearing from the island. Watch the episode where Sayid and Desmond travel to the freighter, and watch the bearing they travel on... it is slightly different to the bearing Ben gives Michael by about 15 degress.
The second part of my theory is that depending on which angle you enter the island at, the different time you can access. In other words, by taking a bearing of 15 degress off where he should have, michael managed to travel back in time on his way back to Fiji, just enough so that the time he had spent on the island, and the time he had been away from reality where equal, did Ben plan this?
The ability to jump to different points in time from the island would give someone very enviable power, power that Ben posesses? Power that Widmore wants? It explains why Richard Alpert doesnt appear to age (by whatever means he leaves the island, certainly not a sub) Yet all the time ben spent on the island, he grows from boy to man completely normally while not leaving the island.
The only thing I cant 100% explain is why Desmond, whilst spending 2 years in the hatch, isnt 20 years (2 years x 10) behind reality, I guess this is due to the angle he arrived at the island placed him 20 years in the past (2 years island time) which he lives in the hatch for 2 years island time. To put it simply, Desmond goes on boating race around 2003 AD, lands on the island in 1983 realtime (-2 years island time) spends 2 years on the island (20 years realtime) meaning that its 2003 when locke sees Desmonds light from the hatch.
Please comment on my theory, I have many but this is the first I have written, I'm not the best at writing so i do apologise if its a little hard to read, but practice makes perfect.
