This theory deals with the Dharma Initiative, and their formation as a covert arm of the US Government, more specifically the CIA, during the Cold War. In an attempt to find "fringe" scientific advances to aid in the war effort and gain an advantage over the Soviet Union. It addresses the Tempest Station, which has been confirmed by the producers as primarily a "chemical weapons facility," the Swan station, which I believe was named after Dr. Ingo Swann who worked with the US Government on psychic advances during the 1970's, and also a little snippet on Minkowski space-time and the Einstein-Minkowski Space-Time Diagram which I believe Dan Faraday was using to figure out the difference between Island time and regular time.
In 1975, when the orientation videos were filmed for the DHARMA Initiative, the United States and Soviet Union were still heavily involved in the Cold War. The word used to describe the easing of tensions at this time in history is "detante" or relaxation.
In the late 1960's and early 1970's the Soviet Union was starting to research some topics that were considered "fringe" ideas to the great scientific minds of their time. However, the US was scared into similar research when between 1969 and 1971, American intelligence sources began discovering and confirming that the Soviet Union was deeply engaged in so-called "psychic research." By 1970, it was discovered that the Soviets were spending approximately 60 million rubles per year on it, and over 300 million by 1975...the year which the DHARMA orientation videos were shot...
So when the Americans got involved with this so called pyschic research....who did they turn to for help and what did they study??
Dr. Ingo Swann, in experiments sponsored by the CIA, is credited with the development of remote viewing or "psychically spying." Initial research was carried out at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). Certain psychically-gifted individuals were able to describe distant locations, often with amazing accuracy. Swann himself, is known for his ability to view both the future and things which happen all at once all over the world and universe. Is it a coincidence that in LOST we have a Swan station?? Is it also a coincidence that after Desmond turns the fail safe key in THIS station, he is able to glimpse flashes of the futre??

Now we have theorized that the island has been invisible or shielded from plain sight, and the location of the island (in the Pacific) would provide a huge strategic edge so close to the USSR...especially if it was invisible by someone pushing the button in the Swan station like CIA employee Kelvin Inman or Desmond... However, if the island were to become visible all of a sudden during the 1970's or 1980's, it would be a huge problem because further investigation would reveal so many security threats to the Soviets....hence "Saving the World" by pushing the button and guarding the invisible "chemical weapons facility..." among other "toys..."
OK....I won't get deep into this last part, but I suggest looking it up for yourself. Herman Minkowski, the namesake for "George Minkowski" who died recently on the show, was a heavy influence when Einstein was studying "electromagnetism" and developing his laws of special relativity. Dan Faraday has in his notebook diagrams with a triangle and various lines drawn on them. These are Einstein-Minkowski space-time diagrams, and I can't really begin to fully understand the physics behind them, but I do know that they examine the difference between "real time" and "imaginary time" in 4 dimensions....
