I think Daniels mind traveling device is gonna be intricate to the overall development of the show. Just think, how do you get all the right people on flight 815? Well you mind travel back to certain exact times in their pasts to help manipulate them onto the path required.
Lets say 1996 Desmond goes back to normal and doesn't see Daniel again until the Island.
What then becomes of Daniels machine?
I think some group (not quite sure yet who) get their hands on his new device.
The evidence? Ms Hawking!
She seems to know exactly whats happening to Desmond. How would she know? Well maybe she has access in the future to this device and can control its use, she can manipulate it to mind travel back to the time Desmond is buying the ring for Penny. She talks him out of it by showing him the red shoe man dying and convincing Desmond that he can never change the future. (we know the future can be changed, Dessie has done so).
She makes the excuse for not getting involved by saying that the future course corrects itself yet why then does she feel the need to interfere with Desmonds past?
Well because getting Desmond to go to the Island and having his accident with the hatch is the catalyst for Daniel actually getting the machine right in the past.
Desmond triggers the failsafe in the Swan and is blasted with the exact electromagnetic frequency to give him the mind travel ability.
Cut to 1996. 1996 Daniel gets a visit from a mysterious gent (Desssie) who gives him the exact settings his consciousness time travelling gizmo needs to work. He writes these settings down in his notebook.
2004 Daniel opens his notebook to read to Desmond the settings Desmond needs to tell 1996 Daniel to use in order for his machine to work.
This machine is now the perfect device for someone like Ms Hawking to use in her own brand of course correction.
