Before i begin i`d just like to point out that i am following the show purely on a week to week as it airs basis, i do not read the spoilers or even the episode titles, i enjoy the surprise so please accept my apology if anything i write is already common knowledge to some of you.
This theory has come to mind in the last couple of weeks/episodes and is more than a little rough around the edges.
"Eggtown" as a phrase has already been well documented on this site, broken down it simply means `telling someone something, so they will do the opposite`. Ben is a master of manipulation, he knows the lostaways well enough now to tell which way they will go if he gives them some information.
Jack, will do the opposite. The more Ben tries to convince him not to do something, the more likely he is to do it.
Ben knows this, so, if he really wanted Jack not to call the freighter surely he would`ve told him to call them.
In telling Jack not to call the boat, he is confirming in Jacks mind that calling the boat is the absolute right thing to do.
This to me suggests Ben wants the `frieghties` to find the island, therefore i would have to assume that the freighter is a part of Ben's plan and the people on it are under his command (at least through a third party).
This would mean that the meeting Kate set up between Ben and Miles was conducted in code (especially considering Kate wouldn`t leave).
If Ben hadn`t shot Locke, Locke would`ve made it back to camp before him and along with Charlie's dying message to Desmond i think this would`ve been enough to convince Jack not to make the call.
I think the Bens tenure as the leader of the others came into question when he turned out to have cancer, some of the others still believed in him but the rest seem to have found their new savior in Locke.
I have a feeling the freighter folk are Ben's back up, recruited mercenaries and scientists here to take over the island from the others (plus whichever lostaways choose to defend it).
As i said, its a fairly sketchy theory thats mainly down to my own instincts and perceptions, please feel free to tear it apart.
