Okay so I am not going to use large and confusing words, I am not going to devolve into a long-winded description of how real world science is involved in the overall canon of the show. This is an attempt to explain or at least give a connection to the one object on the island that is the sole reason I started watching the show. The Four Toed Statue. My belief is that a long time ago, think pre-black rock landing, there was a struggle between the original inhabitants. From this, two factions formed on the island. One faction was lead by Jacob who in the ensuing war was either left as an apparition on the island or forever chained to the island. Here is the kicker; Abbaddon is the leader of the exiled faction who lost the war.
Now season 3 showed a parallel to this with Bens group almost breaking up, rebelling against their leader, we also see the Losties breaking into two factions.
Now ever since this exile Abbaddon has been trying to get back to the island to take it over, hence wanting to kill all who are on it. He is using Widmore industries and other people to try to get back, I believe even off the island he does not age, and I believe he was the one who put the Dharma Initiative on the island.
The statue is part of their original habitation on the island, and as we have seen if they are born on the island, they will not age.
