Charles Widmore is not Ben's genetically cloned sister who had a sex change from the Dharama Initiative then time travelled back in time to send Desmond to the island on purpose. I think everyone is tired of reading nonsense like this.
More likely Charles Widmore is just a rich excentric, who stumbles upon knowledge of the mysterious island, with its magical powers, and wants to posses them. He learned about it most likely through the Black Rock journal he buys.
How does he know about Ben?
Well given he had 8 years after reading the journal, before the frieghter arrives at the island, I'm sure he used with vast wealth to dig up all the information he could get. He may have tortured people to find Ben's identity, hence the video of him beating up that guy.
What is he after exactly?
Anyone of the numurous special qualities of the island. Or simply as Ben said, to exploit it.
Why is Ben protecting it?
We don't know exaclty what Ben is up to, or Dharama for that matter, so we'll have to wait.
Why the team?
Faraday - Study of scientific forces of the island.
Charolette - Anthropology? - Study of island's original inhabitants before Dharama - ie: the four-toed statue. Also could be to learn the nature of the hostiles.
Miles - Study of the paranormal - The whispers, and Jacob.
Naomi - To protect the rest of the team.
Why is he going to kill everyone on the island?
Wheb Ben said this to team Locke, Miles didn't deny it. So we can assume it's true. Remember the guys on the boat practicing shooting.
This must mean he is ruthless, which you could have pretty much assumed anyway, and if he kills everyone else, the island is entirely his.
Why does he want Ben?
The obvious reason is that Ben knows all the secrets of the island, and he can extract them from Ben.
However, there may be another reason not revealed yet which is hinted at by Ben's obvious great influence and resources off of the island.
Who really planted the fake plane?
Don't know. I think it was a nice game the writers added in, having both sides claim it was the other side who did it.
