The others previously had contact with the outside world. The implosion of the hatch causes loss of contact. This means someone in the outside world must know about the island. Naomi's sister could be an other or a survivor. In the sneak peek for S04 E02 we see Charlotte who says there are four of them in their team. Daniel, Naomi, George and herself. This either means her sister is back in the world or is on the island already. She may have joined the freighters to find her sister not knowing or not been interested in their primary objective so to speak. The freighters also know of the island perhaps from Widmore. This could imply that they are to remove the others or to continue Dharma's mysterious experiments. We also know there is another island, does this carry special properties? It obviously cannot be found either. We are left with 6 off island because it will come down to a large decision. The survivors will have to decide whether or not to trust the freighters and this inevitable decision will determine who gets off the island. Also maybe the freighters will judge the survivors and choose the 6 they believe worthy of rescue. Another idea is that they agree to rescue them all taking 6 to the freighter at the time, however after taking the first 6 they loose contact and cannot find the island again but the 6 on the freighters decide to return to land rather than help search for the island again.
