I recently watched the movie "Identity" and it got me thinking. Could all this be in someone's head? A few people on here have entertained the idea, here is my take.
Although we may not know who the "Control Subject" is, I'll start with Ben.
As of late, Ben seems flat out surprised and scared.
In season 2 and early into season 3, Ben seemed to have everything under control. Throughout his torture in the hatch, his countless manipulations of Locke and Jack, and his "God-Like" knowledge of the Losties, he seemed rather fearless. Not that he wanted to be beaten, and locked in the armory, but he seemed that he "knew" he that he would make it out of there alive and still be able to fill the losties with fear, unexplainable mysteries, and mis-information.
Is Ben really special? He's lived with the guilt of his mother dying and a father who blamed him for it. He gets whisked off to a beautiful paradise with his father, in hopes of a better life, only to find nothing has changed. Being very introverted and shunned, he creates a fantasy world of his own. With the seemingly "Magical" properties of this island, the fantasy has become a reality.
Enter John Locke: He has also had a terrible upbringing, and resorts to "Fantasy Roll-Playing" games to escape reality. Ben knows this and has finally found a playmate. Ben gives him the "Good Guy" speech. He shows John the "Magic Box".
John is so desperate to find faith in all this, but has spent his whole life in harsh reality, he is still reluctant to make that final leap because he is waiting for the 2 ton safe to drop on him.
While seemingly miraculous things are happening to Locke, Ben seems to be losing his special abilities and control. The balance of power is tipping in Locke's favor. Ben's fantasy is clashing with John's fantasy and like two spoiled kids, they begin cheating or changing the rules to get their way. Each introducing new characters or "Personalities" with out each other's knowledge(Desmond/Jacob). Locke's "Don't tell me what I can't do" attitude and Ben's extreme desperation as of late are signs of this.
Although we could debate as to who the "Dominate Personality" is, to me Ben or Locke rank above Jack, Kate and Sawyer as the central characters.
Here's where I go overboard and get really deep. Could the creators of "Lost" have hired individual writers to create individual characters, only giving them this story outline, but letting them run with their own ideas, in order to make this a plausible theory?
