So the island is proven to have healing powers, etc... and from the ARG we can surmise that the numbers have to do with the ending of the world. What if the island is the place that is actually doing the ending? What if it is a doomsday clock?
Perhaps at a certain day, forecast by the numbers, the island will destroy life as we know it... and keep protected the "pure" inhabitants that remain on it with its healing powers. This would explain Smokey's need to hone out undesirables.
It might also explain the button and the fail safe from season 2, and why "they are all screwed" once the sky turned purple. Maybe hitting that button reset the clock until the island did its thing. Maybe every time someone typed in the code, the island jumped back 108 minutes and thus delayed Doomsday... while also keep Richard Alpert ageless. Of course there are a lot of holes in the theory. I'm not sure how Claire would have given birth early / on time if her pregnancy kept being pushed back indefinitely, or why people (excluding Mikhael) stay dead, and it doesn't support someone else's theory that Hurley programmed the computer and Charlie programmed the Looking Glass code and Locke programmed the chess game in the Flame... which I really like. I don't know where Jacob fits in to this... or Future Jack... but I'm just trying to figure out the button itself, really.
And it WOULD explain that when the fail safe was turned, all bets are off. Now the clock is continuing unabated to its detonation. Remember the producers have said two things really... 1.) They don't realize how screwed they are, and 2.) We would come to know why there could only be a certain limited number of episodes left. The Other 48 Days... Part 2... begins with Season 2 and I think we'll find out the clock has already been ticking.
