They built some huge structure (4 toe statue is one the last few remnant of that time). However the Islands power began to fade because it was getting drained by the new settlers. So the first natives formed an impregnable shield around the Island to completely cut off the Island with rest of the world.
Soon after the shield was formed a catastrophe occurred the Dormant Volcano of the Island suddenly burst open. It killed everyone living person on the island. However some of their residual essence survived. They in essence became the voice of Island itself. These voices can be heard in the form of "Whispers". Over the time The Island's power began to regenerate. The shield although still standing developed some cracks/holes.

The whispers became active and the they nearly used all their power to save this ship by transporting it to a stable landmass. The survivors of the Black Rock became the native to the Island. The Island's unusual power changed the survivors by slowing their aging process. Richard Alpert was one the these survivors. However later on they discovered that it has few side effects too. The women survivor started dying after getting pregnant. Adam and Eve might be a banished couple from the "Black Rock" survivors.
In mid 1960's Enzo Valenzetti created Valenzetti equation to predict the time of human extinction. The numbers, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 were identified as the numerical values to the core environmental and human factors of the Valenzetti Equation.

Its purpose was to turn off the shield making the Island accessible to everyone outside. They built various Cerberus Vents to reduce the electromagnetic power generated by the Island. If the sufficent amount of power will get diverted to the vents then, the Island would be unable to sustain the shield and would collapse. But before Dharma Initiative group could complete their project "The Incident" occurred where some people of the Dharma Initiative group were killed and the Island itself got into the verge of destruction it disrupted the flow of electromagnetic force to the shields. A part of the electromagnetic force thus got pent up every 108 minutes which was needed to be discharged. If this discharge is not completed this pent up electromagnetic force will increase to a very high increase at a very high rate creating an explosion big enough inside the Island to kill everyone. A failsafe mechanism was also created to stop this phenomenon, however it was deemed extremely dangerous to the person using it. The failsafe when activated will RESET the shield, and regulate all the electromagnetic power. However the residual pent up power if big enough will cause an implosion into the station itself. After 108 minutes, the magnetic field is large enough to damage the Island itself. It forced Dharma Initiative people enter a code every 108 minutes.
During the "The Incident" when the Island was in real danger. A part of the "Original Native's Essence" tried to control this Incident. However it got disorientated because a major part of the pent up electromagnetic force got mixed in it. 1. Recruit people from Dharma Initiative group to natives cause.
2. Learn as much about the Dharma experiments and their weakness, so that he can sabotage the Dharma Initiative group itself making it venerable to native attack.
3. Help these natives get off the Island through the use of Dharma Initiative resources.
In latter half of mid 1980's "The Purge" happened where the natives killed all the people of Dharma Initiative group saving for those people aligning with the natives cause. However one exception was made Radinski was allowed to live in the "The Swan" station provided he pushed the button every 108 min. Some years later after monitoring "Radinski" from "The Pearl" station natives realize that Radinski need a partner. So they falsely recruited "Kelvin Joe Inman" as a partner to Radinski. Kelvin was instructed by Radinski to keep pushing the button until a suitable replacement arrives. Radinski showed Kelvin the Instruction video. However he edited out the part of the video where it warned that the computer on which the numbers are typed should only be used for this purpose only, otherwise another "incident" could take place which will destroy the entire island. Radinski told Kevin Inman about the fake lock-down. He also told Kevlin about the fail-safe key. The failsafe key should only be used in case of extreme emergency. The failsafe key should only be used in case the numbers are not entered in desired time. However it will kill the person using this key. Radinski committed suscide after sometime in the the hatch leaving Kelvin Inman to push the buttons by himself.

Jacob was the leader and the most powerful of the Original Natives before they got killed by the Volcono. Jocob trained and harnessed Ben's powers. He also instructed Ben about the some of the secrets of the Island. Ben used his powers to help Jacob to a way to observe the world outside the Island. However this action weakened Jacob's power quiet a bit. Jacob thus became the leader of the natives, with Ben as face. Later on differences started to arose between Jacob and Ben later on because Jacob did not approve of the increasing scientific methods used by Ben. Shortly later (1988) when Danielle Rousseau and her crew crashed onto The Island. The natives tried to get rid of them too, Ben abducted Alexandra Rousseau (newly born child of Danielle Rousseau). However the The Island found that Danielle Rousseau has the affinity with the Island similar to Ben's. Soon Danielle Rousseau developed great surviving skills that made her escape the natives. She waited patiently for some event to happen which would help her re-unite with her daughter.
Soon with Ben's help natives like Richard Alpert started leaving the Island. However it became apparent to natives that they were starting having problems living outside the Island, so they were forced to return to the Island again. However Richard Alpert seemed to be most immune to the problems faced by the outside world. In due time Richard Alpert started making contacts with other enterprises like "Widmore Corporation", "Paik Heavy Industries" and "Mittelos Bioscience" in order to sustain quality life inside the Island. He there married Katie.
In early 1990's a former Soviet soldier "Mikhail Bakunin" was recruited by the natives and later made in-charge of their communication station "The Flame". Through "The Flame" station Mikhail was able to keep the natives up to date with real time events happening outside the Island.
By 2002 Richard Alpert with the help of these enterprise made a change in the Dharma Foundation replacing Alvar Hanso with Thomas Mittelwerk. Thomas Mittelwerk resumed the supply of essential items to the Island while also trying to alter the Valenzetti equation by any means neccassary.
In early 2001 Desmond Hume's sailing boat crashed into the Island. Desmond was trapped by Charles Widmore who disapproved of his daughter "Penelope Widmore" relationship with Desmond. However Kelvin Inman found Desmond. He told Desmond everything. He lied to Desmond that there is a sickness infecting people outside the "Swan Hatch" and one should never leave the hatch. Kelvin actually wanted to leave the Island by himself through Desmond's boat. However Desmond figured out Kelvin's lie and accidently killed him outside the Hatch. However Desmond was little late in entering the numbers, which resulted in the crash of "Oceanic-815" plane.
In 2001 Richard Alpert convinced Juliet to come to the Island upon realizing that she possess gift which could very well solve the problem of pregnant ladies dying on the Island.
By 2004 Jacob was getting increasingly frustrated at Ben's ability solve the tasks assigned to him. So Jacob used all his remaining power to find people with close affinity with the Island's power. It used some of the Ben's essence to find these people. That is why many of the people has issues similar to Ben's and Ben's healing power began to fade. It created condition so that the airplane would land into the Island itself. However due to Desmond the plane broke apart in air itself. However Jacob was able to save most of the important people. These people would eventually help Jacob in solving the problems where Ben failed.
