I know I'm not the first one to notice that Jacob and John Locke have strikingly similar profiles. This led me to ponder the possibility; what if Jacob is actually John Locke? How is this possible? Well, we obviously know by now that the island has some pretty interesting ways of dealing with time (see Desmond, see Richard Alpert, etc.) What is at the cause of it is not important to me and frankly I don't have enough knowledge in science to begin to explain how it could be possible. But knowing what we know about the island and its properties, is it that far fetched to believe that Jacob could be John Locke-from the future?
We know that John has some kind of special connection with the island. We've known that from season one. We know that Locke is on a journey of enlightenment on the island. Perhaps Jacob is the full embodiment of that enlightenment. As the story goes on, perhaps we will see John fully unlock the potential of the island and in doing so, rise above his normal physical form to become something--more than human?
This could indicate why Jacob said "help me," to John as he was leaving the shack. But why would Jacob need to revisit the past? Maybe its because he is on some kind of course correction mission in time. Perhaps he has seen the future and knows that he has the power to change it by changing the past. This may coincide with the timing of the hatch implosion. If he had risen to a level higher than human and capable of bending time and space there would be no limit to his powers.
Maybe we will find out that all of the Losties were placed on that plane for a reason and it was all designed by Jacob/Locke to "course correct" time. He orchestrated the entire thing in an effort to save the world, but the question is from what? From the island itself? From Ben? From Widmore? I think in the end we will discover that Locke has reached a higher level of being and that Ben is actually his pawn. Am I reaching for straws here or does this "mini-theory" actually hold any weight?
