Like many of you, I don't agree with the purgatory theory. But lately I have been thinking that maybe they are in a spirit world. Somehow Dharma has found a way to get to the island where all the spirits go after death. Although this place is still located on this earth, it was not supposed to be seen or reached by anyone alive.
Maybe because of something similar to when Desmond did not push the button or when there was the explosion of the bunker, the island became visible and could be reached by Dharma. They have used the island's special powers in their research and kept the spirits and the hostiles away with the fence.
The losties are not dead, they really crashed there, they just don't belong to that world and will be able to escape with special powers, maybe Jacob's.
This explains the smoke monster: he is the one getting the spirits at their arrival, that's why he comes near the people, to see if they are ready to go with him. That's why he was there the first night after they crashed, there were quite a few deaths.
The whispers are the spirits looking out for the people who are alive on the island.
It would also explain why: Jack saw his father, John saw Boone, Hurley saw Dave, Eko saw his brother and Ben saw his mother. They're all dead, their spirits are therefore on the island. A clue? they were barefoot.
I think it also explains why the pregnant women could not have their babies: no "new spirits" or new life could get to this place that belongs to the people already dead. And also why some people are cured since on the island: there is no sickness after death and once you are adult, no aging.
I think Jacob is the spirit of somebody important who has special powers because of his knowledge of the island. Ben keeps him captive, he uses him. I think the clues are the ashes and the bottles of red liquid but I don't know how.
It may sound very religious, but if you believe in the afterlife, the spirits have to be somewhere after this life. A clue might be all those names from the Bible: Jacob, Benjamin, Naomi, Aaron, (Rachel or Ruth?)....
I still have to work on the details but I find it answers a lot of questions. I would have been disappointed if they were all dead and in Purg.... but if there is a way they will escape, I will be o.k. I love the show, Where I live we have it in english and in french and I watch both. Even if my theory is completely wrong, I will watch till the end...
