Last night, I thought I had seen something in the Ben-Locke-Jacob scene. I checked today the scene frame-by-frame and Voila. Fractions of a second after Ben is propelled against the wall, the camera bounces back to the rocking chair. It must last less than 0.1 second. Enough to see the profile of Jacob. Check the picture I took from the ABC's media streaming player.
So, theories apart, if we do the math, things start to make sense. The Lidenloff and Cuse said that "what John would hear form Jacob would change his course in the Island forever". This seems unrational given that John was shot and left for dead last night --- what suggests John will come back. But that's not all.
A little bit on how I think the show is articulated so I can better make my point. Like many other blockbusters, Lost pours tons of pop culture references on us. The casting itself: Matthew Fox, Dominic Monaghan, Terry O'Quin --- all pop celebrities. On the island, you have doctors, con artists, fugitives, preachers, rock starts, sinners siblings, and so on. Oh, and everybody has issues with their parents, mainly with their fathers --- sort of very convenient identifier proxy in a country with a track record men going to war --- see where I am going? ☺)
In this avalanche of symbols, the plot follows more classical references. " The wizard of Oz" was the main one so far: Ben appeared on the beach trapped in an air balloon, just like Dorothy uses the balloon in the book. Dorothy's last name was Gale, and her uncle in the book was named Henry Gale --- the same name Ben introduced himself to the losties. Episode 3.20 was called "the man behind the curtain" --- a clear apology to the Wizard of Oz. Even not knowing the plot really tracks any similarity with the developments of the book, think now Cuse and Lindeloff are in crest of another wave.
This wave this time is another strong pop reference, Lewis Carrol's "Alice in the wonderland". I found extremely odd the fact that young Ben had a white rabbit as a pet. Of all animals you can have in a wild island, you pick a lab rabbit? Sketchy. But then Ben escapes and desactives the sonic barrier by typing the activation code written in the piece of paper. What he does next? He lets the rabbit go, and follows the white rabbit. Heard of this before? Definitely. The Matrix scene --- where Morpheus offers Neo the pills. "Take the blue, and you'll forget all this and wake up in your bed". Take the red, and I'll show how deep the rabbit whole goes". This passage is actually extracted from Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland". Alice drinks a magic potion, has herself miniaturized and goes in the rabbit whole. Morpheus says to Neo before he takes the red Pill: "All I offer to you is the truth. After this, there is no turning back". Please refresh my memory, tell me what Ben tells to John just before they open the door to see Jacob. " After this John, there is no turning back". Sweet plagiarism.
So John took the red pill, heard Jacob, unconsciously saw him --- as the authors and the producers made us too by showing Jacob's profile in a fraction of a second last night. John was shot. Neo was shot and died. And in the books and movies where there is a white rabbit, heroes always come back to kick some ass ☺. I'm not sure which plot the authors are tracking, Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland" or the Wachowski Brothers' "The Matrix". But I'll tell you, it is no coincidence. The name of the last episode of lost is "Through the looking glass". Anyone who's read the sequence of " Alice in Wonderland" knows what that means. That's exactly the name of the second book.
Al right then. All this regression to come up with a theory --- John will reborn somehow, and as the tale goes, he'll come back stronger. The heroes generally kill their nemesis. And please remember an underlying pattern on the habitants of this island: everybody who is a lousy dad dies --- Jack's, Sawyer's, Claire's, Ben's, Kate's. It wouldn't seem a long shot that Ben, Alex's lousy dad, would get some in the finale. That's the guy on the top of my death list ☺. Similarly, maybe Charlie would be a part of this pattern too. I have my own death list going on.
So, Let's wait for the next episode. I have an interesting theory to explain what's going on, but I have to work a little bit on it. But make no mistake. The authors know where they are taking us. One last teaser to make that point: What was Autralia's name before it was called Australia? Land of Oz.
