A co worker of mine came up with this:
He thinks that the women die because of Ben. Ben's obsession with the fact that he killed his mother during birth at is manifested by every women that conceives dies at the beginning of the third trimester(month 7 the same month Ben was born and killed his mother). It has been said that Ben is to obsessed with the infertility thing. It also makes sense that he might influence those around him given that he said Locke healed him by being close to him. It makes so much sense.
A second theory:
I don't think that Ben can hear Jacob or if he can i don't think Jacob is talking to him. I think that Ben is in some way controlling/containing/holding Jacob hostage. I think the circle of ashes (Circles are containment fields in magic/voodoo) was an indication of that along with the fact that Ben was obsessed with the fact that Locke heard Jacob. It also seemed like Ben was faking his conversation with Jacob. That seemed really fake up until the shaking and John seeing and hearing him. I think Ben is doing this because he is working from his own agenda. I think he uses the fact that he talks to Jacob and only he to control the group and at the same time controls Jacob by keeping him hostage in the hut. Not sure why he is holding Jacob hostage other than the fact that Jacob is a threat to his power. If this is all true then Ben tricked Jacob some how and trapped him. This is a lot of conjecture but it also seemed to really shake up Ben when Locke could hear Jacob and that combine with the fact that Jacob said "help me" makes me think Ben is up to no good. Also seems like something about the light from the flashlight freed jacob from the hold on him or something else there.
I think the others in the "others" have figured that out. Seems like they are subtly rebelling. Tom gave Locke tape, Alpert gave Locke folder, Ben seemed surprised by both these facts. Also no one jumped up to protect Mikael when Ben called for it. I think that eventually Locke will free Jacob and over throw Ben.
The other reason I think all this is because ben does not really seem to understand the island. He is negative. He kills the women and children(if you believe the above theory), he got cancer and then did not heal quickly after being saved by traditional medicine. He is really the one who has not let go of his past and has achieved his position of power through manipulation and control. He views locke as a threat because Locke really does get the island and has a positive commune with it. Locke has always been portrayed as positive, and though naive trys to believe the best in everyone, he is not jaded and has tried to make the best of every situation he finds himself in. Ultimately I think we will find out that Ben is the source of a lot of the problems on the island.
