The Deal With Jacob
----------------------
I’m sorry but this has a lot of recapping and rehashing. Theory inspired by this quote. "You might want to turn your flashlight off; Jacob feels the same way about technology as you do."
Ben puts on a pretty convincing but still lacking show of Jacob's existence until we actually see him. There are some very significant things that happen when Locke turns the flashlight on Ben. I highly recommend rewatching this scene on abc.com several times.
The important facts that occur during Jacob's tantrum follow. As soon as the light is turned on, it's almost as if an invisible energy was just released in the room. There are noises of the door slamming shut, the chains are swinging, the rocking chair starts rocking, one of the jars in the window was flung at Locke.
Most importantly the oil-lamp fell on the floor which immediately burst into a fire. The next instant, the fire is gone... poof... just like that. Locke was pretty confused by that. Just following that, another Jar is flung out the window.
The craziest part - Ben goes up to Jacob's chair holding the frame and says "That's enough; you've had your fun." Ben is right up in his face saying this, leaving me to believe that Jacob was sitting this entire time. Jacob pushes Ben away with an inhuman force. And there we see Jacob sitting, facing Ben, arms down, calm.
Back to the analytical/theory part. Jacob appears to be some sort of super-being or essence which I can only describe as being God-like, or better Devil-like. I’m no whiz when it comes to religion and religious philosophy, so I hit up Wikipedia and here’s what I got. ~ “Some consider him (the devil) an angel who rebelled against God, and has been condemned to the Lake of Fire.” ~ Lake of Fire = the island? maybe.
The infamous brainwashing video Karl was watching states… “God loves you as He loved Jacob” … going back to how “loved Jacob” is in past tense – God no longer loves Jacob because Jacob betrayed him? I’m going to finish off the religious part with another excerpt from wikipedia ~ “(The Devil) is described as hating all humanity, or more accurately creation, spreading lies, deceit among the world. He is also known to take over a person's body.” ~ If Ben is taking direct orders from Jacob, could we assume Ben’s qualities of lying and deceit are inherited from Jacob?
I know that the theories of purgatory and hell have been dismissed by DnC, but I wanted to bring up that connection in the assessment of Jacob.
Based on all the available facts, I’m going to say that Ben told Locke “Jacob feels the same way about technology as you do” to play another mind-game on Locke. Locke feels the connection and is persuaded. But what did Ben really mean by this? Ben was trying to prevent an accident like what happened, but at the same time he knew that if Locke didn’t believe Jacob existed, that Locke would find out the “hard way.”
More about Jacob. My best guess is that Jacob gets his power for his telekinesis shinanigans from unnatural energy i.e. technology. Let me draw the line for what is natural energy and what’s unnatural. Fire, Sunlight, running water, wind = natural energy. Even though there’s an oil-lamp it’s the fact that fire is naturally occurring. If you noticed, there’s a fireplace/broiler/oven type thing in a corner of his house. Unnatural energy = flashlight light (lightbulbs), batteries, electricity, and Electromagnets!
Jacob was at one point thriving off the islands abnormal electromagnetic field. Until that is, the incident described in the dharma film. The incident was the unexpected visiting of Jacob, probably doing a lot of damage to the Dharma Initiative. Thus Dharma built the Swan and began discharging the magnet every 108 minutes. And now, since the fail-safe key has been turned, Jacob remains almost powerless.
I’m with the other posters that that chemical powder is a circle of protection for Jacob, incase he does lose control or regain his full power.
The whole thing with Jacob’s list and what not and the fact that Jacob is not a person you go and see but a person who summons you, is showing his mental superiority. Since Jacob has been handicapped of his physical strengths and seems to have been sitting in that shack for a very long time leads me to believe that he has been mentally involved with the Others and their affairs. Jacob also has a very very very strong connection with the island and has developed a communion with it. Hence how he can choose who sees him and hears him.
Although Ben has always called Jacob a great man, Ben hasn’t been giving Jacob nearly the credit he deserves considering his power. The fact that Locke saw Jacob and heard him (Help me) leads me to believe that Jacob is done with Ben and will use Locke to regain his superiority among all those on the island.
Lastly I wanted to talk about the idea that Ben constantly personifies Jacob. In my book, Jacob is not a Man. A man cannot survive without food or a woman. Ben keeps referring to Jacob as a man to make Jacob seem much more believable.
Okay that was a lot longer than I thought it would turn out, hi-five if you read it all and understood it lol. Let’s hear what you have to say.
P.S. Don’t give me grief about the island being a hell because I referenced Jacob to the devil.
