For those of you who have followed my previously posted theories, you will see that my journey has taken me from time travel and wormholes, to Plato’s Atlantis, to an apocalyptic Osirian clock. And here I have settled on a “final” answer… Madonna. Huh? Well, what I mean is Kabbalah, and I confess that until now the depth of my understanding of Kabbalah has stopped with the pop icon. Truthfully though, I have found that “Lost” cannot be understood without understanding the central tenets of Kabbalah; specifically, its central mythology, in this case played out in a classical “Passion Play” featuring the trilogy of Isis-Osiris-Horus.
Isis and Osiris were ancient Egyptian gods, two of the most important. They were both brother and sister, and husband and wife. They were children of Nut, who had been cursed by Ra, rendering her unable to give birth. In my “Plato’s Atlantis Rebuilt” theory you can read of the story of how Nut was eventually able to get around the curse. In addition to Isis and Osiris, Nut gave birth to another son, Set, who was ever jealous of his brother Osiris. Osiris came to symbolize good, truth, and knowledge; Isis was the “shining light” of truth as his companion. The pair was so important in ancient theology that they grew in importance in ancient Greece as well, and beyond. Set came to symbolize darkness, evil, and the scattering of knowledge and truth.
Isis and Osiris gave birth to Horus, a messiah much like the Jesus that would follow millennia later. Eventually, Set tricked Osiris into laying in an empty coffin, which Set promptly shut closed, suffocating and killing Osiris. To prevent Isis from restoring Osiris to life and prominence, he scattered the parts of Osiris’ body in 14 pieces around the world. Of course this was not the end of Osiris; he became Lord of the Underworld. Isis endeavored to gather all of the pieces and restore her beloved. She only partially succeeded. Meanwhile, she hid her child on an island, which she tore free to float away where nobody could find it. She also entrusted the child to another for safe keeping.
Set and Horus would eventually fight a great battle, with Horus having an eye gouged out and Set a testicle ripped off. Horus killed Set with a harpoon… but that only shifted the battle to the afterlife, which awaits the “final battle.”
In ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, there is a very important symbol, the Djed Pillar, or Casket of Osiris, which is said to contain his head. This symbol has been important ever since, including in Kabbalah. There is also a belief that an actual device exists, that is 40+ feet tall made of gold, with tremendous power "to translate souls from one dimension to another... drill holes in space, creating 'halls' or 'doorways' linking far-off regions of space to 'wells' on Earth... i.e. wormholes or stargates." These are represented in the Dharma symbol, The Door.
In 1934, FDR’s Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Wallace, went to Mongolia along with his spiritual guru and prominent New York mystic, Nicholas Roerich. Wallace promptly disappeared for a period in Mongolia, apparently on some important spiritual quest. He sent a message to Roerich that said, “We await the casket, the sacred most precious casket.” Some say that he was referring to the Casket of Osiris, the Djed Pillar itself. What became of Wallace? You may not know him, but you know his work, for he subsequently insisted on placing the “All-Seeing Eye of Osiris” on the dollar bill. He was also rewarded for his bizarre behavior by becoming FDR’s next Vice President… repayment for finding the Casket of Osiris?
Lost’s creators have established the story of Hanso as being an “arms dealer” during WWII, and one can speculate that somehow Hanso got a hold of the Djed Pillar, and brought it to the island of “Lost.”
On the blast door map, the Djed Pillar would be placed in the center chamber. It may be paired with a tesla magnet. The chambers that surround the central chamber are connected by lines. These form a Stellated Earth Grid, one of the most important forms in Kabbalah, as it “enables the sending and receiving of energy and information.” The lines that are shown are “meridians” that direct the flow of energy. The references to “CVI,” “CVII,” and “CVIII” are “Conception Vessels,” that represent the direction and flow of energy in the human body. I wonder if there is also some connection between the word “Conception” and the Others’ interest in pregnant women. The “Pala Ferry” is interesting, and may have dual symbolism. It may refer, as noted on Lostpedia, to a utopian island, but it is also interesting that a goddess in Egyptian hieroglyphs is depicted as wearing a “robe that is blue, the color of the sea” whenever she interacts with the D jed Pillar. She also wears a helmet and strange box strapped onto the back of her neck, a very unusual image in Egyptian hieroglyphics.
Combined, the Djed Pillar, Stellated Earth Grid and tesla magnet comprise a device for travel, communication, and who knows what else, certainly powerful enough to bring down a plane. It might be worth knowing that a segment of Kabbalah holds that in 2012, the earth’s poles will flip, thus ushering in a “Golden Age of Enlightenment”… for those who are prepared and “enlightened.”
In this “Passion Play,” Claire (“Shining Light”) is Isis, Charlie is Osiris, and Aaron is Horus. Isis and Horus are very much like Mary and Jesus, and it is not surprising the Eko baptized Claire along with baby Aaron. “The Staff” may refer to the “Staff of Aaron,” which in the Bible identified Aaron as the rightful priest or leader when it miraculously bloomed. I will not be surprised if at some point Eko’s staff, which was placed in the ground above his grave, begins to bloom or grow at some critical point in association with Aaron. The caduceus has many meanings, but in Kaballah it refers specifically to DNA. Moreover, DNA is also referred to as “Jacob’s Ladder” which leads to an interesting concept of “Jacob.”
In fact, there is a line of thinking that the Djed Pillar was left on earth by aliens, the same aliens who “seeded” the earth with life, embedding a message in our DNA. But what is the message? Could Ben be claiming the ability to “hear” this message? When Locke hears “Jacob” say “Help me,” could that be a warning that technology is altering our DNA and destroying the important message?
Kaballah also thinks of DNA as a wavelength, which has interesting implications for the blast door message “I think that we’re on the same wavelength.” It might also relate to the solution to the Valenzetti Equation, which yields coordinates… not in time or space, but in DNA, possibly a genetic marker of the “chosen one,” Aaron.
Returning to the “Passion Play,” Charlie was clearly christened as Osiris in the last episode. I should have seen it all along, but he was flying beneath the radar. This episode established his fundamental goodness, even hero status. As he played guitar in Covent Garden, I noticed the camera pan across the street twice, centering on a sign that said “UNDERGROUND,” a reference to the future Lord of the Underworld. All the while he has been on the island he has worn a shirt with a very small pentagram centered high on his chest, a very powerful symbol in Kabbalah. The ring was most important of all. It said “DS”, with something like a star behind it. While most people think that this was for “Drive Shaft,” they miss the fact that Charlie’s brother emphasized that he had to wear it for the family. It stands for “Dog-Star,” which is Osiris.
Unlike the Christian “Passion”, it is the father that dies in the Isis-Osiris-Horus mythology. Remember being trapped in a coffin? While it is possible the writers of “Lost” will throw in a twist, it would make sense if Charlie does die alone in the Looking Glass station. He will be trapped, a door will be closed, and he will suffocate by drowning.
But that won’t be the end of Charlie, as it wasn’t for Osiris. As Aaron reached up to touch Charlie’s face, Charlie said his final words to his “son”, “Take care of your mother WHILE I’M GONE.” Notice he did not say “when” I’m gone. Even though he knows that he goes to his death, it will not be his end. Claire/Isis will be devastated by the loss of Charlie. She will not want him left alone in that “coffin” in the sea.
The Isis-Osiris-Horus mythology is not new to television or film. One doesn’t have to understand or even be aware of the underlying mythology to appreciate the timelessness of the “Passion Play.” As a kind gesture, the creators of “Lost” added the “unknown” Sri Lanka video and Dharma symbol as a wink and a nod to Arthur C. Clarke, as he also embedded the Isis-Osiris-Horus mythos in 2001: A Space Odyssey. He has long lived in Sri Lanka, and I won’t be surprised at all to learn in the future that Damon Lindelof consulted with Arthur C. Clarke during the creation of “Lost.”
I apologize for the length of this writing, I hope it has been an enjoyable read. It doesn’t come close to answering everything, nor does it seek to, but it does provide a lens through which you can better understand the show while watching. The best part for me is that I have been writing this while sitting in the airport waiting to board a flight. I have to say I look at my fellow passengers a little differently now. At least the flight number isn’t 815.
