I keep thinking about how long Juliet says she has been on the island...a little over three years. Isn't that how long Desmond has been there? What if she and Ethan were on a plane or boat going to wherever 'not in Portland" is when a system failure occurs and bam Two crashes on the island the same day. I think Ben and company could have kidnapped them as they did the tail section people but Juliet and Ethan being great minds and doctors to boot made them extremely valuable to the other's cause, perhaps to counter the effects of the various Dharma projects?
If Ben researched them as he did Jack he could have found out about Juliet's ground-breaking research and experiments and the mysterious death of her ex and held her as his 'hostile' captive. Neither Ethan or Juliet would want that info out about them as it could destroy their careers if they ever were to get back home so they would go along with the plan in hopes of one day to be free. Then flight 815 happens to crash and Juliet is hopeful that this is her way out. Ethan on the other hand is sent to investigate and meets Claire. He hasn't seen a pregnant woman in over three years and gets excited finally he can practice his life's work on her. Its like going home to him so he fights the others to keep her thus making the fatal error of going off on his own to retrieve her after she escapes.
I don't think the others truly cared that much about Claire's baby, not enough to risk their lives to get her back. Not the case with Jack because he could save Ben's life and he is now the only surgeon on the island.
Just a thought but what if the hostiles are those who have crashed here? I think the others are natives, the hostiles are crash victims from system failures through the years. Possibly a group of hostiles collaborated with the others to defeat Dharma but left the swan functioning because it is the most vital project of Dharma's and needed to continue for safety purposes for all on the island. Mikhail I am pretty sure was Dharma and made peace with the others as he said, except he sides with the others because the hostiles (the 815ers) seem more dangerous to him. After all, he lived in peace and solitude for years until the hatch blew and he was spotted on camera in the Pearl by Locke and crew. Why would he turn against those who let him be so many years? I think he didn't kill them because he wants to see what sort of people they truly are, to observe them as Ben did when he was their captive, possibly to decide if he should join them?
I'm still not sure about the rest and maybe I am off base but I thought I'd share my theory on Juliet and Ethan's role in the others. What do you think?
