The Others are a part of some religious cult that found the island. I'm basing the cult thing off of the fact that every time there is a cult in a movie or TV show they are always referencing their leader as a "great man." The island that the Others found has a Fountain of Youth like quality in a STAR TREK INSURRECTION way. This would shed some light on the recruiting of Juliet by Mittelos. Mittelos could be a company created by the Others and the 27 year old woman who has the uterus of a 70 year old could be part of the Fountain of Youth thing. Maybe the woman is really 70 but she looks 27 and the Others want to change her to where she can still give birth in old age. Also the Others probably built the large 4 toed statue because of their culty ways.
So in the 70s Dharma comes along to the island because they think the Fountain of Youth quality might be helpful for their experiments. Dharma tries to wipe out the Others (destroying their freaky four toed statue) but it doesn't exactly work. The Others fight back by using Dharma's security system (Cerebus aka the black smoke) against Dharma. Even the blast door map says something about a "possible catastrophic malfunction of the cerebus system." This could be the "incident" that was talked about in the Swan orientation video.
After "the incident" Dharma returns to the island, takes back control of the cerebus system, and has all new safety precautions. The new batch of Dharma folks on the island includes Danielle Rousseau. The Others once again try to get rid of Dharma's presence on the island but this time they attempt to "convert" the workers of Dharma over to the freaky cult. This could explain the brainwashing video used on Karl. Rousseau is one of the people taken by the Others and brainwashed to be one of them. She has her baby, does something wrong (missing puzzle piece) and is banished from the Others to live on the island in solitude. Maybe the brainwashing video screwed with her brain causing her to be the loopy lady she is now.
Her banishment was most likely sixteen years ago. This is the same time that she changed the message on the radio tower to her distress call. The radio tower was originally playing "4 8 15 16 23 42" but for more on that find the "Sri Lanka video" online. The reason she changed the message was to get help and to notify the outside world and let them know something went wrong…but more on that later.
The Swan station seems to be the only one not controlled by the Others. Maybe they could never find a way in, or they had no idea it was there. When Ben (Henry Gale at the time) is put in the Swan as a prisoner he seems a little shocked. Ben also tries to trick Locke into not typing in the numbers in the computer by telling him that nothing happens if you don't. Ben probably knew that something would happen if the button wasn't pressed and that something was the hatch exploding, and the full end to Dharma.
BUT WHAT BEN DIDN'T KNOW was that the island or the black smoke or SOMETHING has chosen Locke to get the attention of the outside world. He sure did get the attention of the listening post when the Swan blew up. But why does the outside world need to be contacted? Probably to let the Dharma of the outside world know that something has gone wrong again and that they were compromised.
And remember that the outside world WAS notified when the Swan station blew up, and the person who was contacted was non other than Penelope Widmore. What we DO know about the Widmore family is that they are connected to the Hanso Foundation which is connected to the Dharma Initiative. So a few years ago, before the outside world had any idea about problems on the island, the Widmores set up a way to get a replacement for the people in the Swan station by creating a race around the world. The race was a way to get one unlucky sailor off course and have them crash on the island and for them to start pushing the button. Desmond was the unfortunately the sailor who was selected to become the replacement and the rest is history.
But what about Desmond's replacement? Is it Locke? No. Desmond's replacement was Karl (the young man saved from the brainwashing video by Sawyer and Kate). The Others probably got a hold of him first, before he had a chance to find the Swan, and brainwashed him to become just another other.
The whole time travel part of Lost doesn't make sense to me yet. Sure there are a ton of clues pointing to it but how it fits in is a mystery.
And to anyone who says Rousseau is NOT an other, or never was, in Enter 77 when Sayid calls for her and Eye-Patchy hears this, there's a close up on him with the shifty eyes…or at least shifty eye…
