In the last episode Enter 77, we were taken to a new Dharma station called "The Flame". As you might recall, we were shown a quick clip of this station and Patchy in the episode "The Cost Of Living" when Sayid, Locke, Desmond, Nikki and Paulo were inside the Pearl.
Now that we have actually seen Patchy and where he is located, I think we need to do a quick recap of this station. From looking at the screencaps, there are several easter eggs that could provide us with some clues into the Dharma Initiative and other mysteries of the island.
As you may recall, the Flame wasn't actually a hatch like the Swan and Pearl. Instead, it was a small building or outpost painted in what seems to have been a bright blue color. Tethered outside of this station, was a horse with a saddle on it. There is also a corral with a few more horses inside of it. Is this the mode of travel around the island?
On top of the building, there is a satellite dish and from the looks of things, it seems as if it's been lacking the proper maintenance it would require from time to time.
As we venture into the Flame, we come across what seems to be a living room of sorts. There isn't too much in this room that interests me except for several different electronic items strewn about. But instead of looking around for any more clues in this room, I move towards the computer room.
This was the room that Locke and Sayid had previously seen through the video feed inside the Pearl. We are told that this station was used as a communications center. As you can see from the picture, there are alot of electronic equipment all over the place. There are recording and operational devices in the background.
But as you may recall, these machines look to be of the same type that were also located in the Swan. There is alot more wiring running all over the place and looks to be in total disarray.
There is a computer sitting on the desk. It is running a chess program and asks if we want to play. We try to exit the program but find that we cannot. Although playing the game sounds intriguing, we have better things to do right now. Besides, if this was a communications center, why would they have a computer that only allowed you to play chess games?
If this place was a center of communications for the island, there would have been a little more order inside this room and they wouldn't be playing games all day long. It almost seems as if this place was put together in a hurry. Which brings me to my second observation.
As we venture out of the computer room and into the basement of the building, we come across a bunch of C4 strapped all across the walls. Why would someone strap this stuff all along the walls? It seems to me that whoever did this didn't want the equipment/information to get out.
But another thought pops into my mind when I think about this. Could this station be used as a trap? Could this place be used as a lure to the Losties? Another kind of test for them? From what I've noticed in the other stations, all of them seem to have some kind of testing going on. I can't say for sure whether or not this idea is correct, but it does seem intriguing.
Also, I have to say that if C4 was strapped all across this place, there has to be some sort of backup or contingency plan. With an operation as large as this, wouldn't it make sense for Dharma to have an alternate site? Everyone knows that you shouldn't place all of your eggs in one basket and I'm sure that Dharma would have thought about this.
As we move further into the basement, we come across an area that seems to be a storage area for records and other important information. There is also a bookcase full of Dharma manuals. As we pull out one of these manuals, it reads "Dharma Initiative Food Drop Protocol". This is interesting since we did witness one of these recently in the episode Lockdown. Pulling out another binder, we see that it reads "Dharma Initiative Operations Manual". This is something that we've got to take a look at.
Inside this manual, there must be some very valuable information that the Losties can use to help them find a way off the island. But if I go by my theory that this station is a setup, then the information in this binder won't contain everything that they need to know. But grab it just in case because we're in a hurry.
We head back upstairs and we head out of the station. We've checked out everything that seems to interest us here and hopefully we'll be able to unlock some of the mysteries by what we have found.
But just as we are walking away, the station explodes and everything goes up in flames. Everything inside is incinerated. The communications and electronic equipment is gone. Any important information in the basement is gone except for the operations manual which we had grabbed. Hopefully this can provide us with a way off the island.
As we watch the building's flames in the distance, we start to wonder about it's purpose. Was it really a communications center? This is what we were told but something doesn't seem to fit quite right with this story. Or like my theory, was this station supposed to go up in flames? Just like it's name implies, but with us in it? A lot of questions seem to surround this station and what it was truly intended for. Hopefully we'll be able to figure this out in the future but until then, we do have our operations manual with us. Maybe we can pull some kind of information from it to help us on our quest.
