Over the course of the last 2 1/2 years there have been constant hints (like a 2x4 up side the head) at the psychic phenomena on the island. Desmond and his new ability to see the future, Locke's visions, the dreams, Jack's dad, Kate's horse, Hurley's metal hospital buddy, the "Whispers" and most of all Walt....
What I want to speculate on is the reason the Others kidnapped Walt in the first place. During the episode "The Other 48 Days" we see that there might be a second group of Others (including children, which seemed to be missing from Ben's group) on the main island (they walked by the hidden Tailies). While Ben's group play acts at being castaways in dirty clothes, there are islanders who really live a filthy life in the jungle. They are the ones kidnapping the children and the other "Good Ones," not just Ben's group.
I believe that the true jungle group has the psychic abilities that everyone is experiencing in one form or another. They cause the whispers. If you've ever heard an audio of it you would realize they do a lot of bickering and sometimes sound scared, just like kids.
I believe the children on the island are the only psychics, either through genetic manipulation, drugs or a natural phenomena which affects the children (Magnetics?). Possibly, the psychic abilities diminish with age.
Ben's group realizes the Walt had the powers naturally before the island and kidnap him to either help them understand the other Others or use him as a weapon. When they found they couldn't use him, for one reason or another, they let him go with his dad, who had provided a much more needed commodity in Jack the spinal surgeon.
Karl was another child with the psychic gifts who was kidnapped by Ben's group to work for them. But he's outgrowing his powers (and future usefulness) and gets thrown into the cage and Room 23, a prospect which scared Walt.
The abilities are most likely needed for the Dharma Initiative to complete their work, but they lack the necessary children. So there's a power struggle between the two groups over who has the kids and who has the power.
It's a stretch, but why not? I've seen wilder theories than this.
