I think Jacob, a biblical name must be somehow related to Adam and Eva ancient bodies found. These old people must be an old civilization living on the island hundreds of years ago, building the giant statues and the stuff the Dharma guys are escavating on.
"Jacob's list" must be the name given by Dharma people to a script written by an ancient.
Now, the main theme in LOST is DESTINY:, so this script must be some kind of PROPHECY, probably saying "one day people will fall from the sky..etc" describing some particular persons MEANT TO do something.
The Dharma people seeing the plane crashing made deep researches about each survivors life (Juliet talked about jack s profile, containing everything about his job-family-friends-wife, but they noticed he didn't match with the Jacob's List)
So the Island/Destiny set up a chain of events to realize the "Jacob's List" prophecy,,,this includes the reasons they r on the plane all together, but i think the Dharma ppl like Juliet are included too in the Island/destiny master plan (the island/destiny made her husband die)
Locke & his Mother
doesn't seem to you that Locke often talks like HE WAS TOLD a confused story/prophecy and he is trying to compose the puzzle?? many of his words can't be born in his own mind, but he repeats a story he heard.
this is extremely evident during his convo with jack, which is the only time he really loosens up and speaks frankly.
1"two players one is light, one is dark"
2"i think we ve been tested"
3"each one of us was brought here for a reason"
4"the island brought us here"
5"the island CHOSE YOU TOO jack, IT's DESTINY"
6"was a SACRIFICE the island demanded"
7"what happened with the plane was a part of the chain that led us right here, right now"
8"jack, don't leave me, this is not WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN"
So, i'm sure themes like "a testing,light/dark,a sacrifice, choosen people, the chain" can NOT be a creation of Locke's mind, but he was told about it.
I think his weird mother somehow told him a part of this prophecy (she even appeared in his dream pointing Eko's plane),,he says "my mother said i was special" and during all his life (on the island too) he struggles with the doubt
I think Locke's prophecy interpretation is NOT fully correct,
in Season #1 he thinks "the path ends in the hatch","all roads lead here", he thinks the solution of the prophecy is ALL INSIDE the hatch...but
in season #2 understands things don't work, and he loses faith.
in Season #3 thanks to Eko he understands the hatch is ANOTHER PART OF THE CHAIN, and he must go on with his puzzle
