My theory is that the glasses magnify and enhance images to a resolution that appear more affective, then the standard approach of viewing through normal eyes. We see that his (Karl) eyes flare up more during particular sequences of images that obviously have a more intricate purpose. Through this Karl sees other layered images, 3 dimensional and more abstract. This also allows others or ‘Others’ to observe what he sees, when he views the film. They can stand as near and not have the full effect of the film, if there is any effect to be seen later in the show. If that it had any effect on Karl is uncertain, but we do know that writers wouldn’t keep us in the dark about what the video does.

This is particularly effective where nationalist or religious sentiment is invoked and where the population is poorly educated and has limited access to independent or foreign media. For example, the Chinese, North Korean and American governments have often been accused of brainwashing their people.
Here the single approach brainwashing seems to be cleverly disguised, as a large facility as the one Karl was held was in fact and seeming large, the Others preferred to single each individual. As if there is no rush, which seems that they are not interested in massing an army or large group of followers.
This in fact might be misconstrued as a ‘bad’ brainwashing, seeming to imply that the film was not to make the new ‘Others’ become bad, perhaps this related to who is good and who is really bad. The tape might be a realisation to the consequences and propaganda in reality, here and now in our world. So here it could be a good version of brainwashing, realisation and awakenings. To do something or belief in certain ideals. However, since seeing the confinement Karl was held in, its seems plausible that they did not sit him down and asked him to review conspiracies and the how the world is. This obviously brings back the idea that it was forced.
