I believe that the main reason that Ben wanted Jack, is not just the fact that Ben needed a tumour removed on the base of his L4 vertebrae. What I mean is that, yes Ben wanted him to remove it, but why Jack specifically? We know that the Others have contact with the world outside, so it does still exist, but since the Violet/White incident involving the hatch, communications across mass mainland had ceased, as mumbled by Tom & Ben during Sawyers pacemaker injection surgery. As Ben & Tom were discussing when they implanted the ‘fake’ pacemaker, they were discussing communication failures. In another incident during Bens’ surgery, Tom aka My Friendly pointed out to Jack when he asked a question during the procedure.
JACK [holding a chunk of tissue in the air]: “Well, then you probably won't want to be looking at that. [he tosses it in a tray] So, if you really can get off the island why didn't you just take him to a facility? Why all this?”
TOM: “Because ever since the sky turned purple...”,
Here, I believe that Ben could have been sent back to the mainland, but perhaps as well treatment, he could be wanted as a zealot or a person part of a cult/sect that does no conform to the way of the world, hense society. He obviously must have some beliefs against how the world is today, though it’s not made apparent. A hidden grudge against the wrong-doings of society and ‘we are the cause of our own suffering’ may well play a true meaning in the near future.
I also believe that Ben could have been sent back the mainland, before the kidnapping of Jack, Kate & Sawyer, however I believe the reason they wanted him before, and still after the implosion of the hatch and the Violet/White light incident; is because Ben and the rest of his lot, knew time was running out and they need a surgeon as soon as possible. Therefore, I also believe as well as having the ability to send people back and forth from the island to the mainland would take time and would be difficult to find the island. Perhaps there are certain directions that are needed to locate the island, and it’s also possible the island is in fact invisible, undetectable.
Also finding the right surgeon, brave and bold enough; who would risk the chance of death of a patient, on this type of surgery would be harder. Although, this plays well with Jack undeniable content and inclination to fix whatever he pursues, and to fix it properly. Hence, it made sense to have the nearest Surgeon around, which they know a great deal of, background information; is obviously gathered. They (The Others) obviously knew about Jacks’ medical service history and his impulsive decisions to act on what he wants to fix. This evident analysis Jack as a person in made clear in the episode ‘A Tale Of Two Cities’, here Juliet Burke reads copies of a personal file, mainly of Jacks life. The fact that Jack, an impulsive, striving and very determined surgeon, whom just happens to land on an island where a group of peoples’ leader needs life threatening surgery? It seems more then mere coincidence. Though this show does mix the fine line definitions of coincidence and fate.
Kate & Sawyer are still very much a mystery, in terms of why they were kidnapped. The most likely idea is that they were used in persuasion of pushing Jack to perform the surgery, the reason being possibly knowing that Jack is jealous of Sawyer and knew that he (Jack) would do anything for Kate, but knowing she cares of both him & Sawyer. This being the most common theory/answer for their abduction
