It’s amazing how many scenes and characters of this show remind us of other movies, characters and books. Dark, maybe you could start a list of similarities from Lost and other stories we have experienced?… I have seen references to mythology, classics even Planet of the Apes, Lord of the Flies and Stephen King. There are many parallels to the book “The Stand.” And of course we see a lot of tribute to King in the episodes. (The book “Carrie” as recent as Rachel’s end table) Doesn’t Juliet remind you of a benign Carrie? Take a piece of this, and some of that, roll it all in a neat little package and you have a granola bar… sort of… I know, it’s a stretch. But lately I’ve been noticing a lot of “Langoliers” in the episodes. For those of you that have read the Langoliers, here are the parts that seem reminiscent of LOST, (for those of you who haven’t and want to read it, there be spoilers below)
- In Langoliers, The characters are on a cross country flight.
- There is a strange (real but rare in life) weather anomaly, an aurora borealis over the Mojave Dessert (sky turned purple).
- The passengers all seem to disappear unless they had been asleep. (only the destined?)
- One of the characters upon waking finds that even the pilot is gone, and takes over, there is no radio response and considers landing in Denver, but Denver just isn’t there any longer. (Even God cannot find them) He assumes they are off course.
- A young blind (lift up thine eyes)girl starts to develop a type of second sight. (Walter) And in the end can use telepathic powers to control Toomey.
-Some of the characters have flashbacks.
- Toomey a tightly wound guy, starts going crazy because of Flash-backs
- His flash-backs are of his abusive father (daddy issues) and monsters (Smokey) that the father would tell him about called the Langoliers.
- They believe that they flew through a rip in time (only fools are enslaved by time and space)
-Somehow they are in the past. But life went on without them. The past is a lifeless dead world, that slowly winds down.
-The plane is a true time capsule (Kate buried a time capsule with a plane in it) and contains the “present” inside
- a weird creature That sounds like static (Mechanical) is in the forest (jungle) around the airport approaching them. This creature eats what time has left over.
I know that it would be silly to assume that the creators of lost would base their hit show on one idea. But it seems a combination of ideas (whether intentional or not) and some more heavily than others. Thus the granola bar. Please feel free to add more oats or chips if you’d like!
