I know Michael Emerson's character was originally only meant to be in a few episode but then was later expanded, so it's hard to tell whether the spinal tumour storyline is something that was intended for another character anyway or if they came up with it to give a greater purpose to Ben's character, other than whatever else it is the Others are up to in general. This could be the simple reason why Jack wasn't taken in The Hunting Party ... because Ben's character wasn't a fully realised one at that point.
So seeing as this is the direction the writer's took how about this for a possible reason why Ben initially went wandering over toward the Swan station:
Suppose Ben knows about the natural healing power of the Island and knows that it has something to do with the naturally occurring magnetic phenomenon the epicenter of which is at the Swan station.
Perhaps he thought the Island would heal him if he went nearer to the source, which is why it was him who went and why he went alone. I don't believe he got caught in Danielle's net intentionally, but even if he hadn't been captured it could have been within whatever his plan was to prevent the button from being pushed in order to release an EMP, in the hope that would be strong enough to cure him.
Or perhaps he just intended to spend time as near as possible to the magnetic phenomena with being detected, although he'd still have been smart enough to have his Fake Henry cover story ready for just in case in the spirit of being prepared for any eventuality.
However if he really was born on the Island, and has lived there his entire life then he could possibly be immune in some way to the healing effect, or alternatively it could have caused the tumour ... from prolonged exposure to that or to something else on the Island (or of course his tumour may just be one of those things...people get tumours for no apparent reason at all sometimes).
He wouldn't have wanted to be the one not to enter the numbers and press the button when Locke was trapped by the blast door, as if the Swan has imploded whilst he was still trapped inside by those blast doors that could have killed him a lot quicker than the tumour or so he would have believed, probably being unaware that it was possible to get mystically ejected out of harms way when the subsequent implosion did in fact take place a few days later.
Meanwhile back in Othersville Ms Klugh and co are coming up with a plan to save Ben, who they have just discovered has been inadvertently captured.
There are 2 ways that I can think of in which the Others discovered about Ben's capture....either Ben used the computer to send them a message when Locke was trapped, or they actually saw Ben in the Swan station on one of the live-feed TVs in Ben's viewing room on the day that Jack & Locke let him sit come out of the armoury to eat some DHARMA flakes. If that were true then they could also have witnessed the encounter when Sayid got back and confronted Ben with the fact they'd discovered the whole fake Henry ruse.
It was Ms Klugh who came up with the list of Jack, James, Kate, & Hurley and not Ben so it's possible that the information about Jack being a spinal surgeon didn't come into the Others' possession until after Ben had been caught by Danielle in which case that explains why those 3 weren't taken in The Hunting Party.
