there may be things wrong with my theory, or it may already have been posted, if so please ignore it. Chances are it can be disproved though because i have only seen the 2nd half of season 2 once and dont have the episodes at hand to watcha gain unfortunately.
This theory i have had dates back to when Jack and Locke had Ben or Henry Gale locked up in the hatch, after they had found out he was one of "The Others". I havent seen this episode again since i 1st saw it, but if my memory is correct, Jack mentions to Ben that "The Others" had used a spy. Ben then says " A spy?" and Jack says "Ethan".
That lead me to believe that the Others had another spy in the survivors. It could just be me hoping for it, but you never know.
Then in the episode "I Do", which i have only seen once so far unfortunately, Pickett mentions another list, saying jack wasnt on it. that means it obviously wasnt the lsit given to michael, as jack was on it. I believe the name was "Jacob"'s list, though i could be wrong. Since there isnt a Jacob in Lost so far, you have to wonder who he is.
Paulo has, as far as i am aware, only been in Lost since the beginning of Season 3, and it would seem pointless to me to introduce a new character so late on, unless he was important. I think that Paulo is an "Other", called Jacob ( or whatever name they said, i think it is Jacob though ). This raises the question of why he is using an assumed name at the survivor's camp when Ethan didnt bother, but i would guess that it is purely because the show now shows "The Others" and said the name, and it wouldnt exactly be much of a surprise if you had heard it on the show before it was revealed.
Probably a lot wrong with it as i say, but just thought id post it here so proper lost fans who have the episodes at hand to chek up on this kind of thing can score my theory out of 10 :P
