Kate is in league with the others. I am more convinced now than ever. She is not one of the others like Ben, Ethan, Goodwin etc. who were on the island before the crash. She has been compromised/recruited/converted just like Michael was, except she's been working with the others from the beginning. Let me explain.
The purpose of the flashbacks on this show are to show how the characters' past lives effect their behavior and decisions on the island. For example, when Sawyer cons the whole group to get the guns, his flashback shows his ability to create elaborate cons to get what he wants. In the past sawyer was a con man, and on the island he is a con man. This is the case with all the flashbacks ... except for Kate's. Her flashbacks show a completely different Kate than we see on the island. In the flashback where she robs the bank we see a woman who lies to the bank clerk and lies to everyone in the bank making them think that she is just an innocent girl who doesn't know what’s going on, how to use a gun, and who is willing to get smacked in the face to sell the lie. We see a woman who can lie so well that she is able to convince her "boyfriend" and his friends to rob a bank, but depend on her as the key to the whole plan. But then after she gets what she wants, she shoots her boyfriend in the leg, and his 2 friends in the torso, most likely killing them. She did this all to get a little toy plane in a safe deposit box. On the surface this flashback shows why she was determined to get the briefcase. But the real point is to show who Kate is. Kate is a manipulator and deceiver. In her latest flashback she fooled a guy to fall in love with her and marry her, all the while boldface lying to his face about who she was. She was so good that the pastor at their wedding even commented that "what you see is what you get". Her new mother-in-law was completely duped as well. She's good. And don’t forget, she murdered her dad. Sure it was to protect her mom, but it’s not like it was in the heat of the moment or self-defense. She rigged his house with explosives, lured him inside and blew up his house with him inside. It was a carefully planned execution. That is hard core. She also basically seduced her childhood sweetheart (who was married with a child) to hook her mom up, and then stole his car and got him killed. Sure it was unintentional, but still jacked up. She does a similar thing to the farmer in Australia. When she's about to get caught, she drives off the road and flips the truck like 10 times. She did in the end save him from dying, but she still nearly killed him as well, to get what she wanted. My point is that the Kate we see in the past is not the Kate we see on the island. On the island we see a strong, independent woman who may be on the run, but has a good heart. And although she has a shady past, she's sweet and caring and has good intentions. But we don't ever see the manipulator. We don't see the liar. We don't see the murderer. We don't see the Kate that will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. We don't see the side of Kate that her flashbacks depict. And think about the Marshall. The first thing he did when he gained consciousness was to frantically try to find out where she was. He kept on going on about how dangerous she was, how she cannot be trusted. He warned Jack to not trust her, no matter how she made him feel. He had to bring extra guns on the plane because of how dangerous she supposedly was. When he woke up and she was in the tent with him, out of instinctive defense he strangled her with all his force. He was the only one the island that really knew Kate. He was a US marshal who I'm sure had dealt with a ton of dangerous criminals, and yet he was completely freaked out by her. He knew the Kate from the flashbacks and what she was capable of. Her own mother freaked out when she saw Kate in the hospital, and to me she seemed to be reacting to something much more "scary" and "dangerous" than the knowledge that Kate had killed her abusive husband (leaving her with a bunch of insurance money). So where is Kate the con artist? Where is Kate the selfish liar? Where is Kate the seducer and manipulator? Well, I think everything we’ve seen of her thus far is an act. We know that she can’t be trusted. Why do we trust her then? She’s good. She’s fooled Jack, Sawyer, the rest of the survivors and all us viewers as well. Her being bad and deceiving everyone is much more consistent with the character we see in the flashbacks anyways.
Now, if you re-watch the show with the idea that Kate in league with the others, it Kate’s actions actually start to make sense.
1) In the Pilot episode, Jack runs to the beach and starts helping people. During this sequence we see every character there in the crash aftermath. After Jack does his thing, he leaves the crash site to go sew himself up. Then from the opposite direction from the beach, Kate emerges from the Jungle. She wasn’t at the beach. Where was she? Every other character is shown to be on the beach except for Kate. The only other character that I can think of that had an entrance like that was Goodwin.
What was she doing when all the other survivors were on the beach? Maybe she was being contacted by Ethan? I’m not sure, it’s just fishy.
2) Kate is always the first to volunteer to be a part of every expedition of the island.
Maybe she is trying to make sure that the survivors don’t find anything they are not supposed to find.
3) She is the only one really concerned when Sayid leaves the group.
Again, she is trying to protect the secrets of the island.
4) She is overly anxious to get the briefcase full of guns.
While she did want the toy airplane, maybe she also wanted to ensure that the survivors didn’t have guns.
5) She tries to manipulate her way onto the raft.
Again, she is trying to protect the secrets of the island.
6) She was actually the first one down the Hatch.
Trying to protect.
7) When Jack, Sawyer and Locke are looking for Michael and they meet the others for the first time, Kate conveniently shows up and used as leverage to get the guns.
She is one of the others.
8) She is trying to get Jack and Sawyer to both be in lover with her, in order for her to be able to manipulate them.
9) When she is “captured” by the others, Jack is placed in some highly secure, underwater cell. Sawyer is put in a bear cage. But she wakes up in the locker room, gets to take a shower, is given a fancy dress, and fed breakfast. Then after her meeting with Ben (which very little is discussed discussed), she is placed in a cage right by Sawyer’s cage that she can conveniently escape from whenever she wants.
Kate has probably never met Ben, and so their breakfast was kind of awkward. She probably doesn’t know what’s going on, and maybe what the other’s had promised her isn’t happening the way she expected. All that is really said in their breakfast meeting was that the next 2 weeks are going to be unpleasant. Maybe she was forced to really get Sawyer to fall for her, which would explain why she randomly hooks up with him.
10) The last part of the last episode has Jack ordering Kate to escape, but she keeps on saying that she can’t.
Maybe she can’t because it’s part of her deal with the others.
11) Kate has a connection to Dharma through her step father. He was in the military with Kelvin who was in the hatch with Desmond.
Maybe her step father is associated with the Dharma Initiative, and that’s why she was contacted.
