This was posted by richlost on the tv.com forums and I, Muscle Bob Buff Pants, expanded on it. The "Jump the Shark" moment would be that the Others have the ability to transform into the smoke monster. Thats why sometimes it appears as a small wisp of smoke (one Other), or a large cloud of smoke (group of Others). The images flashing in the smoke could be the Other's knowledge of each survivor that they've compiled together. This was thought of because the Others some how get by Sayid and Jin without making a sound, they were not wet, and they were super quiet. Wouldn't wisps of black smoke glide quietly by in the night?

I like it however and it does kind of explain things such as, how could the Other's get to places on the island fast and without leaving tracks? Why didn't the tailies encounter the monster? Why hasn't Danielle never seen the Others? Remember, Danielle said the security system protects the island, I think the Others have shown that they would do anything to protect "their" island. It would also make sense if this ability is also a handicap which is why Juliet says " It doesn't matter who we were" and I doubt all the Others voluntarily want to stay on the island so I bet they all can't but some of them like being there.
