Here's my explanation of several of the mysteries of the island. Tell me what you think.
1 - the magnetics - every ten thousand years or so the Earth's magnetic poles switch polarity. Basically means that the compass point points in the opposite direction, and while this happens the magnetic field lines of the earth weaken, and more solar particles reach the surface of the planet. This is all proven scientific fact. Heres my theory - the island is the site on the earth where the new reversed magnetic pole is emerging. This process has created a unique magnetic anomoly that fluctuates in strength. This explains several things - firstly, it shows why the island can only be detected by the ice station on the other side of the world. On the side of the world roughly opposite the island is the other new emerging pole, connected to the island's magnetic field. So they affect each other, so when the one on the island overloaded, the corresponding pole at the ice station also fluctuated. This also explains the sky going white when the magnet at the island overloaded and was discharged. When the magnetic field collapsed, after Desmond turned the key, the field around the island momentarily collapsed, and this allowed the rays from the sun to flood in, making the sky much brighter for a few seconds.
2 - the numbers - first i want to say that i don't think the numbers being used as the code for the computer in the hatch is the ultimate answer to the purpose of the numbers. This is just another occurence of them, not the answer.
My theory is that the numbers are used by another force (either a consortium of psychics or the power of the island, both explained later on), as a kind of pyschic signpost through which that force manipulates the minds of the people it interacts with. For instance, a group of psychics or the island used the numbers to get Hurley to win the lottery, so that he'd eventually end up in Australia and then on the doomed flight.
3 - the antenna and the numbers being broadcast from it - if you remember, before the french woman changed the broadcast to her mayday, it was broadcasting the numbers, where the aussie guy heard them, gave them to the crazy american guy who gave them to hurley. So why were they being broadcast? I reckon, before the incident with the magnet, the numbers that had to be entered into the computer in the hatch were probably different every time. I think the values changed, and this was detected at a different dharma station, and then the updated values were went by the broadcast to the swan hatch. But after the incident, the experiments on the magnet stopped, and the numbers that had to be entered into the computer kept the same values every time. Thus the people in the swan hatch stopped listening to it, and eventually the french woman changed it.
The possible hole in this theory is that the numbers were engraved onto the outside of the hatch, under the dirt level. The only reason for this i can come up with is that the original inhabitants of the hatch engraved the numbers on the outside as part of their efforts to customise it, along with painting the murals and the invisible map. Or maybe after the incident the numbers were put there by the dharma folk for some reason.
4 - the others - the consensus seems that the others are a break away group frm the original dharma folk, the more scientifc of the group, the more dedicated to their ethics. They feel they are the good guys and are working to prevent something terrible happening. I belive that the others have gone a little insane, and here's why.
5 - the island effects psychic abilities - plenty of evidence of this, like Walts growing abilites, etc. Plus the dreams and visions, like Jack seeing his dead dad, forcing him to take on a leadership role.
6 - possible reason for pyschic effects: there are a group of powerful pyschics somewhere on the island, exerting their force on the others and the losties for their own ends. Probably they were being studied by the dharma people, but grew too powerful for them. Their discussions explain the whispers as well as the monster - the monster is their collective will, harnessed to do harm to people. Its also being used to test people and discover their secrets. This explains why they wanted Walt, to add to their power, but it turned out he was too much for them. The best bit of this part of the theory is that it explains why flashbacks are such a central part of the show. each flashback is the work of the psychics exploring the minds of the poeple of the island.
7 - the big answer for everything: the island is alive in some way, and has a power of its own. Its exerting its will on the world and the minds of the people on and off it for its own ends. I think the island has manipulated everything in order to ensure the losties would land on the island. This is supported by the remains of the statue - a civilisation like that of Easter Island once lived on the island, and worshipped the power of the island, knowing it was alive. The ultimate purpose of the island is unclear - my guess is that it wants the losties to help destroy it, so that its power cannot be misused. But of course it could be completely different, and i bet we wont find out until the last episode or the movie.
The group of psychics theory could also explain the numbers and the coincidences/fate of the people, or the island is alive theory could work without the group of pyschics, but i think both are correct.
