Simple really - the Island is an experiment alright, nothing to do with magnets, time or multiveries. It is simply a mass manipulation experiment. I haven't really thought out precisely why all the people that are on the Island are there, whether for a reason or just by chance. Some may have been directly choosen other may have been choosen randomly.
The experient/Project aims to test how humans react to certain events and situations. It's main
aim is to see how far people will go before they disbelief something... Walt and Michael were allowed leave the island because Walt does not belive the others are who they say they are.
An example of this is when Desmond is told that there is a virus on the Island and he can't go outside. The archetechs of the experiment set up the test by getting the Islanders to wear the protective clothing... Desmond believes them because their story is more plausible when they have protective clothes everytime they go out.
A second example is the punching of the numbers... it is a test of how much people will believe, how long they will go on believing it, and group dynamtics about it's truth.
Who is conducting the Experiment?
My guess that it is either some power corporation trying to learn more about the power of psychology in advertising, or some Government or Governments trying to learn more about group manipulation, and I tend to believe the latter.
This theory might explain why Libby appears to be recruiting or following certain people who turn up on the Island. Also, at the end of series two, then the Ice Station makes that call to Desmond's ex-girl friend, I think it has more to do with them making sure Desmond is back on the Island than if he's somewhere else. Plus if the Ice station is recording certain events on the Island and then rings Desmond's ex-girl friend, then this means that the Island is somewhere on earth, not in some time-warp or other world, as well as ruling out any theory that the survivors are all dead, and are in purgatory.
